Chapter 1: A Break From The Norm.

The buzzer rang for the fourth time that night. Khushi was pacing back and forth in her apartment. "Who the hell does he think he is? Strolling in at ridiculous o'clock, Laad Governor!' The buzzer rang again.

"I am NOT going to open the door!" Khushi stood at door waiting for the boom of Arnav's voice. She knew the routine by now. He would turn up at her door, she would eventually let him in and then the screaming match would begin. Sometimes they wouldn't even know why they were arguing. But lately, he had been turning up on a weekly and now a daily basis. Even if it was for a couple of minutes, even if he had nothing to say to her. She stood there waiting for him to growl her name. But there was silence. 'Hai devi maiyya thank you thank you thank for saving me from that Rakshash for one night.'

She turned to make her way to her bedroom when she heard a soft knock at the door. At first she thought she was hearing things, it was 11 o'clock and it had been a long day. Then there was a second knock at the door."Who is it?" She asked, her voice slightly shaking. Arnav's knocks practically woke up the entire building. This had to be someone else, but who? There was no reply. She turned once again when she heard him.

"Khushi please, let me in." His voice sounded husky and tiered. Khushi's heartbeat began to race! She started patting her chest and hushing to her heart to calm down.
"This man will be the death of me." She murmured to herself. She debated whether to leave him out there or let him in. If she let him in he would probably scream at her for making him wait. If she didn't let him in then she would have to face his anger tomorrow.

She opened the front door slightly peeking through the gap to gauge his mood. He was standing with his head hung and eyes shut. One of his arms was pressed against the door frame as if he needed the support.
"Arnavji?" Khushi asked slightly alarmed at sight of him. His eyes flicked open at the sound of his name. He straightened up so that he stood taller than her.
"Khushi, how man times do I have to tell you not to add 'ji' at the end of my name." He spoke in a low voice as he strode in to her apartment and flung his briefcase, jacket and himself onto her sofa. 'Hai devi maiyya protect me.' Khushi prayed to herself as she shut the front door. She walked over to the kitchen and came back with a cold glass of water and placed onto the table in front of him. Arnav took the glass without acknowledging her presence. He sat back and felt a sense of peace wash over him. After spending a whole day stuck in an unnecessary meeting with some gutless investors this is exactly what he needed. A place unknown, untouched by the cruel corporate world.

"You can just turn up here at any hour you please and expect me to let you in." Khushi tried to catch her words as they spilled out of her mouth. Arnav glared at her for what seemed like infinity, this was the calm before the storm she thought to herself. She shut her eyes tight and braced herself for his verbal onslaught.
"Of course I can." He simply replied before he shut his eyes and put his head back. There was no anger or hate in his voice, just a matter of fact. Arnav knew that had it have been Khushi who was turned up at his house at unknown hours he would not have thought twice before throwing her out. He had to consider the fact that she did let him in and allowed him to escape his own thoughts, and for that he would always remain thankful. Even on the nights when they had argued, Arnav was glad that Khushi was able to evoke some reaction from him that had nothing to do with his business. He felt less robotic. 'But isn't that exactly what you have been trying to do all your life Arnav? To switch your feelings off?' a little voice said. He tried to push the voice to the back of his mind. This was not one of the nights where he was up for a fight be it with Khushi or himself.
"What's to eat? " He asked in the same indifferent tone. Khushi stood there for a moment, as still as he was. She could feel her frustration burning her stomach, she needed to calm down. He didn't look like he was going anywhere anytime soon and she needed something that would calm her nerves. She made her way to the only place she knew she could find the answer, her kitchen.

***

Khushi glanced over at the kitchen clock, it had just gone past midnight. She could see that Arnav hadn't moved at all. 'Has he gone to sleep?' The thought of him staying the night wound her up further, increasing her speed of icing the cupcakes with butter cream. She knew she hated the man, his arrogance, short temper, total disregard for others and ice cold heart made that clear from day one. But there was something about him, a strange pull. She could never figure out what it was but she was completely fascinated by him. He was completely unpredictable, only a year ago he had told her that he hated her and never wanted to see her again. And now he was here, in her apartment, eating her food.

Lately, she had seen glimpses of a new side him. A more subtle, less oppressing Arnav. She turned to get the second batch of out of the oven. She knew there had to be more to him than the cold exterior he presented, it was evident in the way he cared for his sister.
"Cupcakes, at this hour?." He said with a quizzical brow. Khushi slammed the tray of freshly baked sugarless cupcakes on the counter top in front of him.
"Don't you have anything else, like proper dinner?" He asked. For a split second she was taken aback by his innocence. His hair was ruffled, the top buttons of his shirt and his tie undone. His eyes were scanning the kitchen like a little child avoiding to eat his vegetables. A part of her started to mentally prepare parathas for him, another part reminded her who she was preparing these mental parathas for.
"In my house proper dinner is served at a proper time. If you wanted dinner you should have been here at 7pm" Khushi snapped. She could feel Arnav's eyes on her weighing her down, but she didn't look up and instead turned around to face the window. She shut her eyes tight again, waiting for him to snap. But he didn't.

"Anyways," she pressed on, "I thought that if you held no qualms in barging into a girls apartment in the middle of the night, then you can't possibly have a problem with eating cupcakes." She said with a smug smile. He snapped.
"Khushi Kumari Gupta, You need to get your facts sorted, I did not barge through you let me in." He growled. Any trace of innocence was lost. He was standing pointing at Khushi with rage filled eyes. She grabbed her tray of butter cream cupcakes.
"Tomato Tamato. If you want to eat then eat otherwise leave." As she was making her way out of the kitchen, she could see that he was about to say something. He grabbed her hand and in that same moment she grabbed a cake from her plate and shoved it into his half open mouth.
"Good night!" And with that she ran to her bedroom. She knew that if she stopped now it would have been her funeral. He hated it when she walked away without listening to him. Arnav spat out the cupcake.
"KHUSHI!" He shouted after her, wiping the butter cream from his lips.
"Don't forget to close the door behind you!" Khushi shouted back before she slammed and locked her bedroom door. 'If I'm not out there then he has no one to argue with or shout at or wind up.' In the past she had always felt that she couldn't leave him alone in case he had needed something. But today she was over it. If he couldn't find his way around her little apartment then he was not the man of the world he makes himself out to be. She hurried along and sat down in the middle of her bed with her plate full of cupcakes. Before she knew it sleep had engulfed her.

'Oh no 6:30 already!' Khushi groaned thinking about how she would find the energy to keep up with her kids at school today. She brushed her teeth and had a quick shower before throwing on white sleeveless salwar kameez. She made her way out of the bedroom and to her little mandhir which was situated on her living room wall. After she had done her morning pooja she made her way into the kitchen throwing her dupatta onto the sofa. As she was pulling her hair into a bun she stopped and took a few steps back towards the sofa. Her hair, hands and mouth dropped at the sight of Arnav sprawled across the sofa in deep sleep.

She wanted to shout at him to get out. She wanted to yank him off her sofa and throw him out But she couldn't move, she couldn't shout, she couldn't blink, and it was only when she realized that she wasn't breathing she took in a loud, sharp, gasp of air. Arnav stirred from his sleep to see Khushi standing shocked in front of him.
"Khushi, are you ok? What's the matter? What happened?" His voice was husky as he spoke. He saw the dupatta she had thrown at him and handed it to her without looking up at her. Khushi hastily draped the dupatta over her shoulders.
"What happened?" She whispered. "What happened!" She exclaimed. "Please please please tell me you didn't spend the night here. Please tell me you went home." Khushi clasped her hands in prayer. Arnav started to stretch.
"Hai devi maiyya what's going to happen now? What are we going to tell Di and Nani" Khushi asked her self, starting biting her nails.
"Stop it, Stop biting your nails." He said evidently annoyed with her habit. Khushi removed her hand in equal annoyance that he was avoiding the issue at hand.
You didn't spent the night here, right?" She asked in a slight voice. Arnav stood up and face her with a stern look.
"Not at all. I went back to my beautiful home and walked into my perfect bedroom where stood and stared at my king sized bed and thought 'This can't be more comfortable than khushi's couch so I drove all the way back for this special than special couch." His sarcasm always missed that that pinch of humour required to take the edge off.She stormed to the kitchen and started to prepare breakfast furiously.

"Didn't you think, not even for a second of the repercussions?! What will the neighbours think? What will our families think? What am I going to do?" She slummed against the kitchen counter.
"Don't you think that if I had known that I was going to fall asleep that I would have just left! You think I wanted this?" He wasn't angry not yet. He was annoyed.
"Ha! I had told you to leave in plenty of time. But why should you listen to me? Why should you listen to anyone else a part from your big fat ego!." They were standing about a foot apart before Arnav took another step forward.
"Look, Khushi, it's still too early for me to argue with you, so just stop. There is no need to tell Di, Nani or Shashi Uncle anything. I'll tell everyone that I had spent the night in the office. As for the neighbours, let them say what they want to. We haven't done anything wrong so what difference does it make to us?" His voice was full of conviction, he believed in every word he was saying, in every lie he was about to tell his family.
"Of course it doesn't make a difference to you. When a man sneaks out of a woman's home it's the woman that is talked about not the man! This is your fault and there is nothing you can do to make it better. Unless you can go back in time and never have come here in the first place. Yes why don't you do that, you are your own god after all so prove it. Undo it all. Why did you come here? Why do you come here? Night after night, what is it that you are looking for? If its Lavanya then am not her, I won't give in to your wayward ways and I won't spend another moment with a man like you!"
"ENOUGH." It felt as though his voice echoed throughout the entire city.
"I am not just some man and you are not just some woman. We are engaged dammit!" He held Khushi by her arms. Not tight enough to hurt her but tight enough for her not to run. "This is it. This is all it's ever going to be. Me and you. When are you going to get Lavanya out of your head?" There was despair, though not present in voice it flooded through his eyes.

When I read the title I seriously thought something dark has happen with Asr As and Kushi is going to pull him out. But the way you written it's very interesting and more importantly the twist at the end was nice.
Eager for next update already.

Chapter 2 - Home Truths

"I..." Khushi was completely and uncontrollably lost in his auburn eyes. She could feel his eyes searching in hers. He had never spoken to her like this before, not about their relationship. With Arnav everything was always just understood. This was the first time ever since they had been engaged that Arnav had mentioned it. Four months, it took the man four months to say out loud the bond that tied the two together. The union came as a great business deal; Khushi's older sister was already married to Akash, Arnav's younger brother. Khushi and Arnav's engagement further united two powerful industries as one force. This way there was no chance of an outsider staking any claim. But in the midst of making great business deals, a girl was left heartbroken. Khushi had met Lavanya on a few occasion and had become very fond her. But Arnav's Nani never approved of her modern ways and marriage was something Arnav had always refused her.

And now that he had agreed to marry Khushi she couldn't bear to imagine what Lavanya must think of her. She felt as though she was the other woman. Arnav didn't see any of this, he only saw the profit to be made. 'Now Mogambo could rule the world with ease' Khushi thought to herself, whilst reflecting back on the union.

"Khushi?" A hint of concern in his voice bought her back to the surface.

"Hail Mogambo." she uttered. Then quickly bit her lip. Arnav's expression went from concerned to confused.

"What the-Hail Mogambo? Where you even listening to a word I was saying or thinking about Mr India?" He asked through gritted teeth.

"Have you seen it?" Khushi asked, surprised at him eveing knowing the film. "It's so good, don't you think? One of my childhood favourites." Khushi flashed a big child like smile. Arnav loosened his grip on her arms.

"You're strange, you know that don't you?"

"You don't let me forget. Oooh shoot am gunna be late!" She pushed Arnav away but he grabbed her back into his arms.

"I haven't finished what I was saying. You didn't let me finish last night either." He had wrapped his arms round her waist pulling her up so that her face was close to his. Khushi's heart felt like it was going to beat out of her chest. She was sure he could hear it. She grabbed his shirt in her fists in attempt to calm herself down. What had bought this change in him? She searched his face for some sign.

"Why do you keep bringing Lavanya into this? WHY? Whatever the problem is, it isn't her so stop making excuses and just spit it out. What's your problem? If I stay away from you complain to Di, when I try to spend time with you all you want to do is wind me up! What do you want from me dammit?" She never thought she would see this day when, Arnav Singh Raizada, would ask her what she wanted from him. But then she never imagined to be engaged to him. She couldn't think straight. Not whilst looking into those burning eyes. Not whilst she can smell his cologne and be wrapped in those strong arms. All she could think about was how unbearably handsome he was. Like Adonis in the flesh. Her eyes swelling from tears she didn't want to shed, from emotions she didn't understand.

"I...I...I really am getting late." She whimpered. Arnav loosened his grip as he saw tears forming in her hazel eyes. 'Well done Arnav you did it again. Make her cry then kick yourself about it until the next time you make her cry.' He thought. His eyes remained on hers. Khushi saw the anger in his eyes fade to an apology to concern. 'Why couldn't he bring to his lips what was in his heart' she thought to herself.

Khushi quickly drank a glass of milk whilst scoffing down a cupcake from last night.

"Yuck! Sugarless." She drank the last bit of her milk and started to prepare her bag for work.

" Its Sunday, aren't the schools closed?" Arnav asked whilst looking into the fridge as if he was waiting for something to appear or avoiding having to look at Khushi.

"We are holding a charity fair today so I have to go manage a stall."

Arnav's phone began to ring. As he spoke on the phone, she could feel his eyes on her whilst she ran from one end of the flat to another grabbing things she needed for the day and throwing it into her bag.

"Yes Aman, confirm the meeting for today I'll be there in exactly two hours." He cut the phone and started to gather his belongings.

"Office? On a Sunday? You should go home first, Di will be concerned. You haven't even called her, should I speak to her?"

"Thank you Gupta, if not for your sharp thinking I would have walked into my fashion house in the same clothes I was seen in yesterday for a very important meeting. Thank you."

"That's exactly my point, you never listen to anyone, but you should..." Khushi turned to face Arnav who was staring her dead in the eye.

"Oh, you were joking..." But he never joked. 'Just humourless sarcastic, caustic comments!' Khushi thought.

"I drop you off to school." He ushered her to the door. Neither of them spoke a single word. All the while Khushi kept thinking of how she would answer his question. What did she want from him? She knew he wouldn't let this matter rest for long. 'Do something Khushi, think!' She began biting her nails.

"Stop it." She heard him say. Arnav gently pulled her hand down from her mouth and held it in his. He led her to the car, never letting go of her hand. This was all new to Khushi. He had never behaved like this before. Khushi kept thinking about his tight embrace. She could still smell his cologne on her on her duppata. She could still feel the sensation of his hot breath on her lips. His shirt was creased on his chest from where she had grabbed it. She could feel herself blushing. 'What's happening to me?' She didn't want to be in the car alone with him. She didn't want to be close to him. She didn't want to think of him the way was doing so, she wanted to clear her head. She wanted fresh, Arnav free air.

"Khushi?" She had stopped as they reached the car. Arnav was still holding on to her hand.

"I think I should take a taxi. You need to go home and get to an important meeting." She gently pulled her hand from Arnav's and started to fiddle with her bag strap. He strode over to the car and opened the passenger door.

"Nothing is more important than your answer Khushi." He got into the driver's seat and switched on the engine. It had to be now or never Khushi thought to herself. He wasn't going to take no for answer and she had to get a burden off her chest.

She got into the car and slammed the door shut. She sat facing away from Arnav. All the frustration from the previous night, all the months of tension and arguments and pain hit her with full force.

"Khushi what is it that you are looking for from this relationship?" He sounded sincere, as though he was willing to make an effort in this false relationship. Khushi continued to stare out of the passenger window.

"Kushi! How many times do I have to tell you to look at me when I am talking to you." He barked at her accelerating the speed of the car.

"And when will you understand that if I refuse to look at you when you are talking to me, it's because I don't want to hear what you have to say!" Khushi could feel the words about to pour out of her mouth and as much as she tried to remain silent, the tsunami that was building up over the past four months finally hit Arnav, in his car.

"I told jiji this wouldn't work. I told her that I am more than happy to give her my half of the shares in the company. I don't understand business, quiet frankly it scares me and I prefer to stay away. But the irony! My own life has become nothing but a business deal. I am a bloody joke. You have made a joke of me and my life Arnav Singh Raizada." Khushi could feel heat coming off her body. She didn't know to what extent her anger may increase, but at the time she felt like she would burst into flames or set the car on fire.

"What the-" Just as Arnav was about to talk when Khushi turned to face him. She hadn't realised how close he had bought his face to hers but she didn't stop.

"One minute, I've not finished." She said in a voice as stern as his.

"Everything has to be according to your clock, on your time. Now that it suits you fit, that you can see that you can't get out of this sham of a relationship you think it's ok to act like my fianc.? To ask me what I want from this relationship, and expect me to answer. You think you can just stop by whenever you want because you put a ring on one of my fingers? Last night is the last night I let you in my apartment! Buaji has told you before that this is not acceptable in our household. And now that she has decided to go Lucknow for a few months you think you can prance around like you own the place! Who the hell do you think you are? During Payal jiji's wedding you argued with me all the time over everything. And how could you forget about my employment at AR regardless of how short it was?" Tears started spilling on to her flushed red cheeks as she continued to vent.

"And during the wedding, on the last day, when I was giving away my most beloved sister to your family, you told me that you hated me that you never wanted to see my face again. Then, two months later you propose and I am expected to say yes!" Arnav sat in silence controlling his own anger at khushi's words. 'She was expected to say yes, was she given no choice?' He thought.

"All my dreams of the perfect marriage all shattered in a single moment. Everything I had ever planned since I was a little girl, how I would meet him, what he would be like, falling in love, our big day, it all just went down the drain. How can I ever be happy with a man who hates the sight of my face? How can I accept a man who left the woman who loved him more than anything for girl he barely knows? How can I be with a man who doesn't even believe in marriage? Bauji aur Naniji have asked you time and time again to set a date but you never can seem to find the time to answer them. There is always a meeting or conference or a file to be read. So the answer to your question is that I don't need anything from you. Your question is too little too late. You have caused too much damage in my life for you to start building foundations now. So please stop acting like you care or that we can play happy families. You Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada have failed."

The car screeched to a halt. They had reached Khushi's school. Khushi was trying to compose herself before she left the car. All the while new thoughts began to invade her mind. How would her family deal with the shock of the engagement being broken off? No doubt after hearing all this he would want the ring back. She stepped out of the car where he was already waiting. He walked over to her until she was backed against the car door. He put his hands on either side of her shoulders so she couldn't escape.

"Finished?" He asked through his teeth.

"Finished." Khushi retorted, her eyes still blazing with rage.

"Kushi Kumari Gupta, without moving or speaking I want you to listen to what I am about to say. Arnav Singh Raizada never fails. The word does simply not exist in my dictionary, understand?" His voice was low. His stare was constant. Khushi found him more terrifying like this than when he was shouting. She blinked at him to let him know she understood.

"I am not acting like your fiance. I am your fiance. I am going to make this work even if it kills me. So you can try all you want to push me away, threaten me with buaji, blackmail about Di or tell on me to Shashi uncle. The fact of the matter is I will be there the next day and the day after that. Because that's what marriage is about, for better or for worse, remember?" Khushi's thoughts flashed back to a conversation she once had with Lavanya. She was convincing her to propose to Arnav.

"And as for stopping by your place, I do that because I find that I am able to find some peace there. I feel like I can get away from being the corporate monster and have a chance at a normal life. I don't have to worry about my responsibilities at home, I can be just Arnav." Khushi didn't know how to feel. She didn't know whether to be joyful at the thought of him being able to finally confide in her or to hate him for making it hard for her to break away from him.

"It's true I use to stay away form even after the engagement. I did it because I thought it's what you had wanted. Because I thought it was best for us. I only started to visit you when you told Di that I don't give you the time of day. So this is me, giving you the time of day that I have to give." His anger was in control but his eyes were giving away his story.

"Hi Khushi!...is everything ok?" A small but large middle aged woman was looking at Khushi and Arnav with some concern. 'Oh no, Shruthi Seth! She will announce our tiff to the whole world. What to do?' Ms Seth was an English teacher at Khushi's school. She was also known as 'Page 3' as she had gossip on anyone you could think of. The last thing Khushi wanted was for her to spread the news that the 'ASR' was having a domestic with his fiance in the parking lot of a school. Khushi saw Arnav looking at Miss Seth with disapproval. Before he could say anything to her to make matters worse Khushi wrapped her arms around his waist.

"Arnavji, I'll miss you too." Khushi felt Arnav freeze as she caught him off guard and pulled him closer.

"Believe me when I say that Miss Seth is the last person that should see us at odds with each other" Khushi whispered into his ear. Arnav hesitantly wrapped his arms around Khushi's shoulders as she buried her face into his neck. Arnav could feel her breathing on him. He could smell her sweet strawberry shampoo. He allowed his body to mould around Khushi's soft form as he held her even closer to himself. Khushi could hear the drumming of his heartbeat. Strong and fierce just like the body it was beating in. Without thinking she snuggled closer to him. Any sign of feud between them vanished. She felt like she could stay like this forever. She hadn't felt this safe in very long time. The sound of someone clearing their throat bought Khushi and Arnav back to earth. Both Stepped away from each other. Khushi was the first to speak.

"Well ok then, I will see you tonight Mr. Bye." She waved, walking towards the school desperately trying

not to glance back.
