When you make a film on a famous personality who is loved by everyone, it is bound to do well...sonam's biggest achievement was not ruining the movie...but no she didn't carry the film on her shoulders...shabanas performance and Neerja's heroic deed was what most people took away from the film...sonam Was good by her standards, which is nowhere near the best.

Coming to aalia, she was fab in udta Punjab. Best actress isn't someone who plays the sole protagonist in the film but someone who gives a good performance and makes a mark..even if the film has 2 other strong protagonists.

Your logic is somewhat flawed. You are discounting the appeal an actor has in pulling the audience to the theatre. It's through an actors performance that the audience is able to connect to the character being played on screen. Sonam playing Neerja had everyones attention from the start because it was a familiar character to the people, the fact she played it well helped the movie succeed.

^^i would disagree...people went into the theatre fully aware of the story, who Neerja was, what she did and what she had been through...they were well and truly prepared to empathise and admire her character in the film...now same with Shabana's character...ofcourse people were prepared to empathise with Neerja's mother...the situation and the event itself greatly helped the actors connect with the audience since they have known the characters even before they saw the film...

But Sonam's triumph as an actor was "not being terrible" when people expected the worst out of her...Shabana's triumph was actually delivering the goods and ripping people's hearts out when people already expected her to be good anyways...that I think differentiates the good performance from the one that "didn't completely fail" ...both had characters that the audience was fully ready to empathise with but shabana managed to actually connect it to the people with her performance...sonam merely didn't make people cringe like with her previous performances...

Anyways...you are entitled to your opinion...btw..I love reading your posts...always very well thought out and articulate...

Keeping my bias aside (I despise Sonam's offscreen personality), they could've awarded Sonam too like the debut award. Sonam was good in Neerja. Alia was already awarded some new soch thing so why one more? Everyone knows these awards are based on popularity and connections still they want 'em. Even the ones who refuse to go; collect them later.

I don't think Rishi Kapoor deserves the award. Rajat Kapoor was much better. Even the guy who played Sonam's dad in Neerja.
