It's ok, Anu---you are not offending me :-) I don't identify myself as a feminist. Only as a Heroine ;-)I really enjoyed writing that episode of Payal and Khushi. Their quick activity. Doing more than hand-wringing. It reminded me of the Nancy Drew books and Enid Blytons I devoured in my pre-teens.
JALEBI by Jalebi Jane (EPISODE 022)
IT IS A RARE CIRCUMSTANCE in my serials (and may it remain so) that I show a Heroine less capable than a Hero. Khushi had managed to enter the garden room via the window, but once her sleuthing and snooping were complete, she discovered that she could not get out.
To fall through a window and land on a bed is possible for anybody. But to climb back out of that window turned out to be impossible for Khushi. Yes, she was agile, but she lacked the upper body strength to lift herself up to the window ledge.
And, of course, there was no possibility of building a ladder of furniture to reach it. To balance a chair and table on top of a soft mattress was not only precarious, but would broadcast to Shyam that someone had entered his room.
Oh! And if you are wondering about the door, Sisters---that was not an option either.
When Shyam had slyly changed the lock to the garden room, he had installed the sort of device which required a key to both enter and exit. This is why Payal had been forced to remain outside with bated breath while Khushi had been investigating inside.
When Khushi now related her predicament to Payal---that she was unable to get herself out through the window---her sister flew into a panic. And admittedly, her panic transferred to Khushi, arousing fear in her own heart.
Hai, Devi Maiyya! Shyam might return any minute now.
There was no hiding place within the room. But even if there had been, it was not a solution Khushi would contemplate. She would rather break down the door and have that villain know that someone had entered, than be trapped in a closed space with him.
"Jiji, you'll have to break the door," Khushi said. But even as she spoke the words, she could hardly guess how Payal would manage it. Her sister---sweetness and goodness incarnate!---was not very intrepid. Nor strong.
Perhaps if she had help---!
Discussing the matter through the door, they determined that Payal should seek assistance from Happyji's Garage. He and his staff often worked late; moreover, they would have the proper tools.
Payal ran off to the Garage, and returned almost immediately.
So soon, in fact, that Khushi marvelled at how speedily her sister had raced across the lane, communicated the dilemma and returned (presumably) with a crew bearing hatchets and hammers.
Khushi pressed her ear against the door and heard Payal plead, in a voice laden with tears, "Please-oh-please, help my sister! She's trapped inside! Hurry!"
Reciprocal tears sprang in Khushi's eyes. She was always more moved by her sister's distress, than her own. She now heard footfalls draw near the door. And then---
"Khushi?"
The shock---the utter surprise!---of hearing Arnav Singh Raizada was such that Khushi flew back from the door. There was no mistaking the voice. And it had a profound physical impact on her.
What was he doing here?
"Khushi! Tum theek ho?" he asked.
I must admit, Sisters, that despite his recent malevolent plans for our Heroine, in his tone, at this present moment, there was sincere concern---do not doubt it. And Khushi was not unaffected by it.
She returned to the door frame, and said, "I'm fine. But can you get me out?"
The door knob rattled violently as he tested it.
When he spoke again, she had to strain to hear him---and she realized that he was turned away from the door, no longer speaking to her, but to Payal. She heard the word window' and ladder' and some other words. All unclear.
The next clear sentence she heard was: "Let me, Sir."
It was Aman Behl's voice.
He was here too?! Had all of Headquarters come to Janakpuri to witness her disgrace?
"No," Arnav replied. "I'll climb in. Stand beneath the window to receive her."
Khushi's eyes moved to the open window, as her feet went to the edge of the bed.
Within a few seconds, Arnav came through. He landed more ceremoniously upon the bed than she had, and in one swift movement, sprang to his feet.
It was an odd way to meet again following the kiss debacle. But she managed to meet his gaze.
His eyebrow raised as he contemplated her condition---from unshod feet to unbraided hair. Somewhere in the evening's melodrama, her hair had come undone and her mojris had been forgot.
Oh, and her faithful friend, her dupatta was absent too.
Though the neckline on her kurta was demure, she felt exposed beneath his examination. And the details of their most recent meeting created one giant blush. Her arm instinctually crossed her waist and her hand lifted to close over her bodice. She looked away.
And then his eyes drifted from hers to take in the room.
"Are my employees so underpaid that they must resort to breaking and entering to augment their income?" His attention returned to her, his mouth showing a hint of humour. "What the hell are you up to, Miss Gupta?"
His attitude. His visible pleasure at finding her thus compromised. And her own embarrassment at being caught in this situation by him, of all men, made her more defiant than grateful.
"It's not a crime to enter a room on my own Buaji's property," she stated. Technically, it no longer was Buaji's property---but Mr Raizada did not know that.
"Then why not ask your own Buaji for the key?"
"She went to bed early." This was not a lie.
"Of course, why bother to wake her when you can climb through the window instead?" His smile was only slightly mocking, as he added, almost to himself, "Your mind is a mystery to me."
"Your presence is a mystery to me! Why are you here?" she asked.
He bent his knee slightly, and commanded, "show me your back."
"Kya?" She did the opposite and faced him squarely.
"Unless you want to live in this room, turn around, and give me your hands." Arnav caught her shoulders and forced her to turn away from him. "Your hands," he repeated, impatiently. She placed her hands in his palm. He then said, "Place your foot on my thigh." She did that also.
"Not too high!" he warned, under his breath.
She coloured when she saw that her heel was dangerously close to---
"Now sit on my shoulder," he instructed.---
What!? "No-no-no! I can't do that," she protested, attempting to drop his hands. "Find another way!"
"This is the most efficient way. Just sit on my shoulder. I'll stand up, and you'll be able to reach the ledge. Aman will catch you on the other side."
Hesitantly, Khushi did as he directed and was amazed at how effortlessly the manoeuvre was performed. Although there was one rather awkward moment when she had struggled to reach the ledge, and he had placed his hand under her backside and lifted her higher.
She had been mortified but managed to grasp the ledge and swing her leg so she straddled the window. It had been a day of climbing in and out of windows, she mused.
She saw Aman waiting for her below; and she reached for his extended arm, but just then a thought entered her mind. Turning back, she looked at Arnav and asked, "But who will lift you?"
"I'll manage!" he said, and gave her hip a firm push.
Aman caught her. And as soon as her feet touched the ground, Payal drew her close. By the time her sister released her, was satisfied that she had not sustained any injuries, Arnav was on the ground too. She turned to find him standing behind her, unrolling his shirt sleeves.
Their eyes met.
"Thank you," she said.
He shook his head slowly as though he were refusing her thanks.
Khushi frowned at this odd behaviour.
She began to speak, when he stopped her by pressing the fleshy part of his thumb against her mouth, and murmured, "you can thank me by finishing what you began this afternoon."
