IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 008
Khushi at Shantivan
1. It really wasn't until I witnessed the wide-eyed wonder with which Khushi took in Raizada House that I truly comprehended the class disparity between our Hero and Heroine. To see how Khushi marvelled at the opulence and the size of rooms highlighted for me that these two are not only divided by philosophical differences but by worldly differences too.
2. Khushi is very cute in that evening conversation with Shyam. She's embarrassed to ask him for a favour but the weight of being indebted to ASR is such a burden that she overcomes her hesitation and asks for a job. Once again, Arnav and Shyam are aligned in Khushi's experience. The former creates problems for her; the latter solves them. I'm sure you noted, Sisters, that Shyam immediately took Khushi's call but moments later when Anjali tried to reach him, the call went unanswered. Hmm...
3. I really enjoyed the first meeting between Khushi and Anjali. Anjali is instantly captivated by Khushi's natural, guileless manner. And here is one notable difference between the two women: Khushi stands on the dehleez trying to remember which is more auspicious---to enter on the right foot or the left foot? Anjali does not have to think about it. She knows it is the right foot because for Anjali these rules and rituals are paramount; they are the underpinnings of her peace.
4. That scene by the pool with Anjali and Arnav made me wistful. Mr Sobti was exceptional. Arnav's sadness was palpable. I got a sense of how lonely his life is. Anjali is sensitive and sympathetic but she is so fragile that she cannot be a true confidant. Khushi has Payal. Arnav has---his plants. Sigh.
5. I love watching old films; and am especially fond of the very stylish rom-coms from 1950's. They often used the split-screen method to show what was happening concurrently in separate locations. Episode 8 ends with a split-screen shot, as Khushi and Arnav are poised for potentially another collision. The frame freezes exactly when their faces are parallel. And I had to pause it just there because they are so beautiful together. Double-sigh.

Hey maya
Very well written points about the episodes its like watching all thebepispdes once again but with so much more details and understanding. But would like to say its not Ms Irani anymore. Its Mrs. Sehgal now.
Maya,Yes, yes, yes...did go on an IPK marathon as I said and caught up on the first five episodes...and then went one jump ahead and cheated and watched the Rakshabandhan episode, where Arnav turns up in the Kurta and thrilled Anjali. Maybe because while the early episodes of this show for me stand out for their production quality and finesse...the newer ones where Arnav and Khushi are a couple are like soul curry or comfort food! I totally thrive on that comfort factor when my Asli duniya is at its grueling worst.Okay, I digress. On to episode 5. As you said, there is the entry of Shyam Manohar Jha. dhamakedar entry. One wonders is this a show about two heroes after all? The music that is one of IPK's most defining qualities, is at near perfection in this one. The famous 'Daiya ho' echoes on our screens for the first time, and we are forced to sit up and take notice of this non-descript looking youngster with his muscular structure and very middle-class appearance (haha, not to sound snobbish at all, but when we have the dapper Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada dressed to the nines complete with a cravat on the other side, one is bound to compare, hai na?!)...Shyam beats up the goons single-handedly a la Khushi's favourite hero Salman Khan! Interesting that you mention looking at details closely with this new viewing of the show, Maya. I now realize that for an impressionable 18 or 20 year old, with stars in her eyes and notions of Rajkumar, SMJ must have seemed like the real thing. Shyam cannot resist staring at the beauty before him, and as Ruchi said, Khushi'sglancing back at him when she is leaving with her parents truly has me worried! Even though I know now that the Her Shaitaan- Rajkumar will sweep her off her feet so fast she won't know what hit her...full marks to Abhaas Mehta for a stellar performance, he lived the role and made us all hate the villain with a passion...not here though, in this episode he just ignited our healthy curiosity! The Anjali and Arnav scene was so spectacular too...all the lovely camaraderie coming through instantly. If Barun and Sanaya shared great chemistry, I will reiterate here than Barun and Daljeet had the most amazing equation too. ( Think they played one of the most convincing looking brother-sister duo. They were believable. Another I think which added to this sense of genuineness is their face cut which is very similar.)You can instantly see two good actors, utterly comfortable with each other right there..all the key points that made the show such a beloved hit right until this day...one thing I did notice was Barun's voice modulation here...he still had not quite got ASR down pat here, had he? In the later episodes, he managed the right amount of huskiness and rich baritone, which brought the audience to its knees. (Oh my God! Yes! I am finally meeting someone who has noticed this.Barun did take a few months to set the character. Not only the voice modulation, even his stares and glares very not the ASR ones in the beginning. But once he did, there was no looking back.Yes, Buaji and the young ladies are both equally worried about the Dillon ka shahar Dilli! Loved all the fun events leading to their entering Buaji's home...Waiting for episode 6!Best,Anu@N yes girl, this is all providence, right, the serial going on air one more time and Maya deciding to launch one more of those Redux style reviews. Love it! đł

Arnav calls Di as DIDI, hopefully first and last.
This really jars when you revisit this episode. No one recognizes Khushi when she goes to sell saris even though news was all over right?Used to love this particular suit jackets/coats. He stopped wearing them :/^^One of my fav Khushi/Sanaya shot. (I too love this shot. On a completely unrelated note, black kajal really suits Sanaya) I noticed she didnt say a word of thanks, she didnt take the dupatta from him too, her mom did. So i assumed it was her gesture of gratitude at that moment. So no lovey gaze etc đ too cynical lol.

Another wonderful review. The highlight for me in the episode was the Arnav-Anjali convo, I liked how Anjali is so open and happy despite having gone through the same tragedy that Arnav too had seen as a young boy. However the tragedy and his sister's handicapped forced him to grow while up rather early in life and hence the tact, poise and the privacy that exudes him, quite opposite to Anjali. Its also notable how she fell for someone like Shyam( whose giving his undivided attention to Khushi, now).Anyway the contrast between the siblings was well etched. Arnav has grown up into a calculative and shrewd person who downs trusts, read Khushi, while Anjali does.
