I have recently started watching IPK again (this is the 3rd or 4th time I believe) and it feels really great to get a chance to discuss the episodes here.

I completely agree with you on all the points.

It was a very well made and a very thought through show.

I fell in love with Khushi in the first episode. She was honest, polite, slightly kooky, resourceful, clearly had a big heart, a very special relationship with her sister, and SO, SO beautiful.

I loved the way she was dressed up that day. Very Khushi like yet understated.

I too loved the way Arnav's entry was weaved in with the fancy dress/prince conversation. It was such a refreshing break from the "kahan hai mera raajkumar" type dialogues that are so common in Desi TV romantic shows.

I never noticed the 'eyes closing eyes opening' thing before you pointed it out, but yeah, it is completely there and it is just wow! I also loved the inter cuts between A & K where the focus was on their eyes. One very calm and determined. The other nervous, but equally determined. A great way to introduce the audience to the core nature of these two characters.

I am really glad you started this. I will be looking forward to it everyday. :-)

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 002

The Dori Scene

Another superb episode. Sometimes tv serial writers tease us by delaying the hero-heroine first meeting; am so pleased that that was not the case here. The writers brought the leads face to face and into high conflict immediately.

1. Those first few minutes of Arnav and Khushi's meeting tell us that this is not going to be a sweet romance. This hero is far from tender. I didn't realize (or I had forgotten) that Arnav was physically rough with her from that very first moment. He practically throws her against the runway like a sack of potatoes. Very slim beautiful potatoes :-)

2. In fact, many of the patterns of their subsequent relationship are introduced in this episode. Her dupatta always gets caught. He always assumes the worst of her. He always mistakes her naivety for guile. And, of course, he introduces his favourite theme of 'aukaat' which he wil return to again and again.

3. And this episode also establishes how Khushi has (and will continue to have) an uncanny talent for unintentionally pushing his buttons. I'm referring to that moment in the infamous dori scene where she says, "why do you say such things about my sister? What if someone did that with your sister? What if your sister's wedding was halted?"

4. Ah! The dori scene. What can I say, Sisters? Its power has not diminished even after all these years. The scene also highlights what I have heard from others---that in these early episodes, Ms Irani is a stronger performer than Mr Sobti. As a heroine-centric viewer, I felt her performance in this episode was amazing. Of course, we could also make the argument that it's incredibly difficult to play the role of Arnav because all his stuff has to remain simmering under a wooden exterior; whereas, everything Khushi feels is allowed to come to the surface. She can cry and wobble and shout---and all he is allowed to do is change the quality of his glare.

5. Speaking of being in character, Buaji shows us in this episode what her role will be in this serial. She is ever-ready to attack Khushi and will influence Garima to do the same. I loved that moment when Khushi bursts into the courtyard and realzes that the baraat has left. It's so effectively shot. The entire Gupta family is excellent in the powerful scene that follows.

Whew! Looking forward to Episode 3 tomorrow. I have always loved the durgah episode.

Thank you for your comment. I so agree with everything you say about Khushi and how she immediately steals our hearts. Even after all these years, Khushi continues to inspire me.

Forgive me for ranking people because that is really crass, but I think Sanaya Irani is the finest actress working in Indian television today.

That is very true. Khushi is one of the most endearing characters we have seen on Indian TV. And SI owned that character like a boss. She was flawless as Khushi. Always. I don't remember feeling even for a second that she is off in a scene. Naive, angry, happy, upset, madly in love, heartbroken...she was the embodiment of everything.

And I agree with you, the role of Arnav is difficult to execute. No emotion. No humour. Yikes! I wouldn't last a moment.

IPKKND Nostalgia: EPISODE 003

At The Durgah

It's difficult to speak of favourite episodes when it comes to IPKKND. There are so many to choose from. And each is favoured for different reasons. But for me this episode would be very near the top of the list.

1. Because this is the episode where Arnav's power over me begins to form. This is where I begin to see the Hero potential in him. Not only because I find Mr Sobti really attractive with the hankerchief bandana ;-) but because Arnav becomes three-dimensional in this episode. The breakfast scene tells us that there is a chink in his armour--and her name is Anjali. We see that he is capable of feeling for someone. And also that he is capable of putting his own preferences aside to please another. This is an essential heroic quality.

2. And in this aspect, Arnav and Khushi are identical. This episode establishes that both will endure and suffer for their respective siblings. A theme that will forward the plot and weave all the way to the very last episode.

3. I also love this episode because we see the madcap Khushi. Not only is Ms Irani exceptional in the dramatic tense scenes, but she is a superb comedic actress. That scene where she chases Arnav down. Brilliantly shot and executed. "Ja, Khushi, ja!" I laughed out loud at the bit where she's opposite him, doubled over trying to catch breath so she can then tell him off. And she is so lovely in white. That scene earlier when she walks past him and her dupatta caresses his face is THE moment when I fell in love with them and their potential. The moment when I knew I had to keep watching. I had to see for myself how the writers would transform mutual loathing to love.

4. And I loved that the writers tricked us into expecting that a distraught Khushi was going to commit suicide, only to introduce us to her jalebi-making habit. This clever reversal is a statement from the writers that we should not expect the usual tv serial fare from them.

5. I also want to mention the scene when the neighbours come around to apologize. This is important, I feel---because it establishes that Khushi's actions were right and that she has not destroyed Payal but has actually saved her. And the writers are introducing to us that quality in Khushi which will emerge again and again---that is, her intentions are always faultless but there is a fault in how she executes those intentions.

Whilst I agree with most of your points, the points 4 & 5 are where I want to differ from you. The writers did a gross injustice in making us believe that this serial will be different but it wasn't considering the appalling story line when post kidnapping of Arnav and even during the misunderstanding as I was really looking forward to Arnav and shyam's countless face offs considering both of them were such amazing actors. I strongly feel that Abhaas was wasted in this serial.

Regarding point 5, khushi was sometimes frustratingly selfless which makes it hard for the viewer to sympathise with her, there is a very fine line between selfless and self respecting and she tends to over step it quite easily.
