THE JILTED OBEROI BRIDE
Prologue
Decked in luxurious wedding finery, she looked ethereal earning many envious glances. The red wedding dress shimmered around her taut frame which shivered however with an unknown despair as her kohl lined eyes plaintively stared at the huge doors, none of the happy glow a bride should have present on her face.
The murmurs of the guests increased like a swarm of bees buzzing around creating a sense of wooziness in her.
Where was he?
Her heart thudded with a vengeance and uneasy thoughts surface.
What if he had got into an accident?
A shiver raced through her. No, he was fine. He would soon reach the Mandap and marry her. They would be bound by the sacred bonding of marriage and forever be each other's. All the dreams they had seen together, all the promises they had made to each other will then be fulfilled.
Sweat beads glittered on her forehead. Her breathes became heavy as her hands became clammy with sweat.
A hand touched her trembling shoulders gently. She turned to look at the dark amber eyes of her soon to be brother-in-law.
"I think we should all go inside. Tell the guests to leave!" he murmured, his forehead furrowed in apparent tension.
Tell the guests to go away! Tell them that there would be no marriage! No, that was not acceptable to her.
"No Om," she clutched his hand tightly, "Shivaay will come. He promised me. He is on the way."
Omkara looked at her with a clandestine pity in his eyes and something flashed in his gaze; something that made her feel as if her world was abruptly tilting on its axis and she was as unprepared for the blow as anyone could be.
Her breathe choked. There was something in the air that disturbed her. Maybe it was the cold gazes of most of the older Oberoi's or perhaps the smug look her future mother-in-law carried.
"O-Om!" she stammered, and her eyes filled in with a sudden panic.
Her hands trembled in his grasp and her shoulders stiffened as if she were trying to hold back on the urge to break down right then and there.
Omkara untangled their hands and gripped her shoulders tightly.
Her wide eyes focused on his. He gulped.
"S-Shivaay will not c-come. I-I am sorry."
