I think Gayatri is educated in Hindi Medium. So she has difficulty in understanding English. Moreover Indian at that time were more accustomed to Tea rather than Coffee. In North India mostly ppl start their day with Tea (Chai) rather than Coffee. It was the pre-independence Era. Ppl took more pride in getting educated in Hindi Medium or in their Mother Tongue rather than learning English. I think Gayatri has good command over Hindi Language rather than English. That day Gayatri gave fitting reply to British officer because he was talking in Hindi.
But Gayatri suddenly addressing Ranaji as "Suniye" "Unka" "Ji" is too awkward. Because calling Ranaji itself is a mark of respect. Yes wives in old times did not address their husbands by name. But Ranaji is his title and mark of respect in itself. So she suddenly using Pronouns and Verbs to address her Husband is really very weird. Hope Gayatri adheres to calling him as Ranaji only

Maybe Gayatri is literate in Hindi and not English. And that is not a bad thing. It's not that not knowing English makes her inferior. Considering that this is the 1940s, the fact that Gayatri is literate atleast in Hindi is a big deal since education wasn't considered very important for girls.

The other possibility is that Gayatri knows English but doesn't know what 'black coffee' is or hasn't heard that term. The word 'black coffee' wasn't probably used among commoners back then. Actually, coffee itself wasn't a prevalent beverage among them. And so when she hears it, she could not make an immediate association of what that meant.
