I was sexually abused as a child: Kalki Koechlin
Kalki Koechlin
Actress Kalki Koechlin spoke to a leading news channel about being sexually abused as a child.

While talking to NDTV, Kalki revealed that she didn't want to talk about it on a public platform. She said that a revelation like that just becomes like a "shocking headline" but somebody "who has gone through CSA (child sexual abuse) is not a headline."

Without giving out details of her own experience, Kalki in a conversation with NDTV said, "The reason you haven't heard about it is that I don't like to talk about it. For me, it's not a one day headline, it's something that's a reality I have lived with for a long time. Many of us have gone through it and most of the people that I know, especially close friends of mine who are women, have gone through some form of CSA (child sexual abuse). It's just so out there, so much of it that I think it's not something that should be ignored."

Kalki quoted statistics that 53 percent of children in India had been sexually abused and highlighted the gap in proper sexual education in schools. However, Kalki dismissed the idea of only talking about the issue on a public platform. "I don't think public platform is the only way to talk about CSA, I think sometimes it's important to speak about it, break the silence; other times it's important to have a place to go to where you can trust somebody whether it be a psychiatrist, a family member, or a social set-up, an organization which helps when you talk about these things. The problem is we don't have these trusted areas to go."

Talking about never coming out in the open about her past experience, Kalki said, "The problem about talking about it publicly is there's also the danger, it just becomes a shocking headline and somebody who has gone through CSA is not a headline, that's a reality they have lived with all of their life."

Earlier, Kalki spoke at a conference on child sexual abuse organised by actor Rahul Bose's NGO H.E.A.L. Kalki, had made headlines some time back for her spectacular monologue on Women's Day. Kalki has been one of the few celebrities who have been vocal about women's issues and had also starred in a satirical video about violence against women.

That's terrible. I appreciate her courage to speak it out. I think she & Aamir are two celebrites who have tried to increase awareness of this dreadful issue. 👍🏼

It takes lot of courage and guts to talk about sexual abuse at any age.. Glad she's coming forward, atleast now after seeing celebrities like Kalki people come open up and make their abusers face punishment which they deserve.

Thats courageous of her to talk about it now. Anyways I wish more parents in India educate their kids about stranger danger and sexual assault when they are young enough. Everyone is uncle and aunty, some relative's relative's relative and deemed harmless and its the ppl who are close to you that sexually abuse your child(unless its the parent themselves which is plain appalling).

Yes. Indian parents really do need to have "the talk" with kids. I find Indian kids tend to be ill equipped to protect themselves. No one tells them that their comfort zone is more important than respecting the nice uncle/aunty/bhaiyya/bhabhi that is friends with the family. Respecting elders and listening to them is drilled in so much, that scumbags take advantage of nave kids.

Forget about talking to the kids there are still parents who after hearing about molestation/abuse from their own kids won't believe and to top it off they'll suppress kids saying it'll tarnish the family name so they should forget about it🤢

Yeah it is very important to teach kids that certain parts of their bodies are private. There is a campaign in the UK which is the Underwear Rules, which is basically the parts of the body usually covered by their underwear shouldn't be touched by others. And they should not touch others in those areas.

This helps explain to children that their body belongs to them and that there are good and bad secrets and good and bad touches.

Another problem is that if it does happen the kids the parents don't listen or let it go.

^^^ even if you teach them about that stated above, they are still too emotionally naive to understand what is happening due to a certain situation they're in which makes them feel like maybe they're just over thinking. Trust me.
