Jaal - directed by Guru Dutt has Dev playing Tony, a ruthless smuggler without an ounce of compassion. He plays Geeta Bali and uses her for his own devices.. and right until the very end there is no attempt to redeem him or reform him from the villain he is. I thought it was brave of Dev to play such a character at the peak of his stardom.

Ye raat, ye chandni phir kahan remains one of Dev's best songs ever. What a tune by SDB, and lyrics by Sahir! And Hemantda knocks it out of the park.

This song is less known but I like Dev's dancing here smiley36smiley27. He also looks wow! smiley43

I don't know if it was a conscious thing- but he seems to have taken inspiration - or at least he reminds me of - from Gregory Peck's character Lewt from Duel in the Sun. Same rakish arrogance and bad man qualities.

In today's numerous newspaper articles dedicated to Dev Anand, I read Shabana Azmi mentioning Kala Bazar for giving its heroine the freedom to choose between two suitors. It was such a mature take on adult relationships.

I agree. His movies were feminist and ahead of their times. The women always had agency whether it's Asha in Kala Pani or Maria in Jaal or Alka in Kala Bazaar.

In Kala Pani, the hero doesn't demean Kishori or her profession for pushing his innocent father behind the bars. That was so remarkable.

In terms of cultural impact his anti heroes were so successful. Javed Akhtar was inspired by Tony.

Yeah, he talks in depth about Jaal and Tony in the Classic Legends episode on Dev.
