Waheeda Rehman with her exquisitely chiseled features, a rare simplicity, amazing grace, and immense talent, had a truly transcendental appeal.

Her beautiful presence lent dignity to every character she portrayed in her long and illustrious career spanning more than three decades. From the vamp of CID in 1955 to the grandmother of Delhi-6 in 2009, she was fortunate to have got a variety of roles, and her career graph is not only studded with memorable performances but also some remarkable on-screen dances.

Waheeda Rehman danced like a dream, and being one of the few dancing heroines to have entered the industry, with her beauty and unparalleled dancing skills.. She put life into all her dances, and her eyes beautifully captured the different emotions and nuances required for the song's situation. Apart from typical classical dances, she also performed other lighter styles and left her graceful stamp on all of them.

Her proficiency as dancer of high calibre has been brought out beautifully in this dance piece…

Vyjayantimala was trained in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kathak dance forms! She had extremely agile footwork, expressive eyes and mastery over classical dance, making her the best dancer bollywood could ever produce! Rangoli, Kathputli, Jewel Thief, Devdas, Paigham, Ganga Jumna, Suraj etc. are some of her films, where she could display her dancing skill! No other dancer, who entered bollywood after her, could replace or take her place, including Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Bhanupriya, Sridevi!!!

Vaijayantimala was a fantastic dancer but I disagree that nobody else would have performed the numbers that she did.

She was from an era where classical based dance sequences were still in vogue, they started taking backseat with time and by the time she retires in 1970 they were almost absent.

Some good dancers like Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit , Meenakshi Sheshadri did not get the same opportunities that Vaijayantimala got but they still proved their skills as dancers in whatever limited scope they had. Hema malini in particular did her classical dance shows for quite some time, maybe she still does. Waheeda Rehman too, could have done all those dance sequences that Vaijayantimala did so well.

Sandhya rarely got an “easy” song. Unlike other leading ladies who mostly needed to just lip sync or act coy in every song, Sandhya was called upon to perform some unbelievable tasks in the songs, in addition to acting for that particular song.

In this song, it is Mahipal who is singing and later Sandhya joins him, but boy, what Sandhya is doing apart from singing in this song is just superhuman. She is dancing, and it is not an easy dance. She is dancing while balancing several urns kept one over the other delicately balanced on her head. It is an amazing performance of dancing, while balancing so many urns on her head for such long period of time. Just thinking about it boggles my mind.

Incidentally, Navrang was the movie in which Mahendra Kapoor made his debut as a playback singer. This was his first song, and it became quite popular. Asha Bhonsle was the female singer. Bharat Vyas was the lyricist, and the versatile C Ramchandra composed the music.

Whenever I watch this song, i always suspect those matkas are held together with some kind of glue, would be nice to have a source that says they were not.

Never was a fan of Sandhya's dance or acting, V.Shantaram should have chosen somebody else for Pinjara and not her.

Her every dance move chanted profound truths - joy, love, adoration and hope, sewn in a few moments to write a work of fiction, a story of beating the pre-written plot to become an icon!

Vindhya flowed in dance as if it were the only way her body actually understood how to communicate. She was cautious in every bhangima, and no matter where she was, she would shrink and sink into the background! On stage, her charm exploded into the most colorful depiction of a beautiful soul.

For the most part, her only audience was that antiquated love stance staring at her with its two dusty eyes. As she turned, her gaze was drawn to him, who was less proficient at concealing himself in the shadows than she was. He blinked briefly before gazing, his head was inclined to one side, and a hopeful smile played across his lips.
