Someone commented like this on YouTube.

Vyjayantimala was trained in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kathak dance forms! She had extremely agile footwork, expressive eyes and mastery over classical dance, making her the best dancer bollywood could ever produce! Rangoli, Kathputli, Jewel Thief, Devdas, Paigham, Ganga Jumna, Suraj etc. are some of her films, where she could display her dancing skill! No other dancer, who entered bollywood after her, could replace or take her place, including Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Bhanupriya, Sridevi!!!

Sandhya rarely got an “easy” song. Unlike other leading ladies who mostly needed to just lip sync or act coy in every song, Sandhya was called upon to perform some unbelievable tasks in the songs, in addition to acting for that particular song.

In this song, it is Mahipal who is singing and later Sandhya joins him, but boy, what Sandhya is doing apart from singing in this song is just superhuman. She is dancing, and it is not an easy dance. She is dancing while balancing several urns kept one over the other delicately balanced on her head. It is an amazing performance of dancing, while balancing so many urns on her head for such long period of time. Just thinking about it boggles my mind.

Incidentally, Navrang was the movie in which Mahendra Kapoor made his debut as a playback singer. This was his first song, and it became quite popular. Asha Bhonsle was the female singer. Bharat Vyas was the lyricist, and the versatile C Ramchandra composed the music.

I recall my Aai telling me that Sandhya suffered from some foot ailment because of all the dances.

Yes, she was confined to a wheelchair for a long time because of this. 😭

Her portrayal as Stree (1961), a film version of Shakuntala's story from the Mahabharata. As the epic mentions that Shakuntala and her son Bharata lived in the wilderness among lions, Shantaram decided to include real lions in some scenes. Sandhya did not have a double for these scenes; she prepared by shadowing a lion tamer and practicing in the cage with the lions!

The interesting thing is that even though Madhubala was not a Trained classical dancer, she is still giving competition to professional dancers.
