Its not about Rahul or his belief. As I said its about the lesson for the next generations.
Hinduism is more than just worshipping. Its a constant search for truth. One who is in search of truth cannot be an atheist although Rahul believes he is one. Rahul is the ' Sutradhar' of KB's plan. Had Rahul not questioned his existence, the superstitious beliefs of the villagers would be still there and people like Namrata and Inder would use it in their favour. In a way he is telling all his bhakts to learn to question everything. This is why they are born as humans.
Also, the basic theme revolves around faith and sceince where Gauri represents faith and Rahul represents science. Gauri believed everything about the temple but one day her brother died and she questioned herself. How can her God kill someone for being at a wrong place at a wrong time? Thereafter she began her quest for truth. She learnt Namrata is the culprit, she saved Data Thakur and yet never changed her perspective about KB. Now, its Rahul's turn. He had been thinking logically all the way. He solved many mysteries. He knew how the headless horsemen was riding, he solved the mystery of shivgan's aarti, he found the secret door to the underground temple and he learnt the truth about Inder's death also. But he has to know how Shivlings can cure diseases, how Gauri could see the future, how only Preeti saw Shambhu baba who was dead already and most importantly how both Gauri and Rahul didnt die even after spending a night in the temple. So, yes he has to have the realisation that KB wad helping him always and irrespective of whether he believes in KB or not, KB was always guiding him.
Why is it important? Its important because KB has to strike a proper balance. Its important thing to do so that the coming generations have faith in him but are not scared of his wrath. Fear is the root cause of superstition and superstition is a curse.
