Today is a World Health Day
In 1948, the World Health Organization held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7th April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is celebrated to create "awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)". Activities - related to that particular theme and the resources provided - continue beyond 7th April.
Every year the health theme changes. Like this year they have selected climate changes and its effect on health.
In 2008, World Health Day focuses on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change.& establlish links between climate change and health. The theme "protecting health from climate change" puts health at the centre of the global dialogue about climate change. WHO selected this theme in recognition that climate change is posing ever growing threats to global public health security.
This way the global community will be better prepared to cope with climate-related health challenges worldwide. Examples of such actions are: strengthening surveillance and control of infectious diseases, ensuring safer use of diminishing water supplies, and coordinating health action in emergencies.
What can we do to help this cause on this day?
I can name few ways we can help
1. Use less water and stop wasting water or else water supply might become so low that it might threaten our survival.
2. Limit the use of aerosols which might help with diminshing ozone layer which increases the risk of cancer.
3 Use less gasoline or petrol and find other means of transportation to avoid air pollution.
4. Eat right foods in right propotions, exercise which is especially necessary in this computer age when we tend to spend hours in front of computer. More Physical activites are must for growing children to avoid child hood obesity. Parents need to make sure kids are eating well balanced meals at home and in school. Teaching then right eating habits at early age might help both parents and kids avoiding diseases and trips to doctor's office.
5. Also teaching them personal hygine from early childhood washing hands before eating might go long way avoiding infectious disease from spreading.
6. Save our natural resources. Preserve rainforests and plnt more trees avoid forest fires which all helps environment,
Most of these are well known issues and we all know them, but the question is are we or people around us are acting upon them?
Let us celebrate this day by educating people around us. You can add more to this if you like.
