High Heels Affect Health
Sliya Raichand | Jul 18, 2007
High platforms, stilettos and pumps are sexy and chic. According to experts, high heels affect the back. The higher the heel, worse the problem. Wear the right heels and walk your way to better health.

High Heels Affect Health

Picture yourself wearing heels that are 3 inches high or more. Walking is strenuous, difficult and even painful.

The right, natural walking style is when your heel touches the ground first. The pressure goes onto the heel and then to the rest of the foot. Walking is supposed to be a process of contraction (the shortening and thickening of muscles) and relaxation (the loosening and slackening of muscles). This eases the pressure on the foot, the calf and leg muscles.

However, when you wear high heels, your toe touches the ground first and this puts a lot of pressure on the back of the leg. It also puts pressure on the calves and the thigh muscles and results in contraction. Relaxation of the muscles does not take place at all.

Daily use of stilettos, pencil heels and strappy shoes with slender heels are harmful. A look at the health hazards because of these heels.
Varicose veins - clogging of blood vessels because of pressure Bad knees because of the stress on the lower leg and calf Osteoarthritis - degeneration of cartilage of the joints Spinal cord injury because of 'wrong walking', affects posture Injured hip joint because buttocks get strained
  • Affects blood circulation because of extreme strain on muscles, pressure and wrong 'walking style'.

Remember, walking in high heels puts constant pressure on your body beginning with your feet. The walking style is wrong, and results in a strain on your calf and thigh muscles. Your hip joints are stressed because of the strain on your buttocks and there is constant strain on your spinal cord, which results in back pain.

Unnatural walking also disrupts proper blood circulation, which in turn affects the central nervous system. Regular use of high heels is a cause for concern as your overall health is affected.

Avoid high heels with pointy toes because your feet are crammed in the front and there is tremendous pressure on them at the back as well. Regular use can lead to foot deformities.
Stilettos and pencil heels are beautiful but use them wisely. They are meant for nights out with minimum walking. So, before you think of wearing them daily think of your health first.
