This crucial 30-run final wicket stand has ensured England have got to a pretty good total. Yes it's below par by modern standards, but all the ODIs prior at this venue weren't high-scoring and this is surely a challenging pitch too. Not the kind where you can come in and play shots straightaway. It's on the slower side and England do have variety to suit these conditions. Looks like these two teams are giving us another low-scoring spectacle that they gave us four years ago.

Special mention to Tom Latham for his outstanding captaincy moves. Southee out injured, Ferguson suddenly sidelined with a niggle before the game. That meant he had just two frontline pacers and needed fillers. To make it even more tricky Boult was off the boil with the new ball, but Henry put his hand up. Bowl Test match line and length ball after ball, troubling Malan and eventually getting him.Bairstow was looking good but Santner showed how varying pace can give you wickets even if there's not much turn. He put on a real beauty of a spell teasing batters and got Bairstow.

Glenn Phillips: "Brilliant today, they got off to a flyer so to get to 280 was very pleasing. When Stokes was rested, that was one left-hander out, but Tommy has plenty options and he used them well. A bit of nibble early on, the slow ones turned, it'll get better as it goes on."

Akash: "You play calmly and get to 280.. you huff and puff and get to 280.. same difference. Huff and puff is more entertaining though."

Peter: "Have these two teams met in a World Cup before? I've not heard it mentioned in the build up or commentary......" Oddly enough yes, they played the World Cup opener on this same ground in 1996... hope that helps.
