The team needs to keep this in mind for next time. They’re playing to a Netflix crowd now, so they gotta walk that tightrope between funny and offensive.
It’d be a shame to see Sunil Grover, who’s crazy talented, get canceled over some careless jokes that half the audience doesn’t even care about.
Part of the issue with that "joke" is that Tripti is still finding her footing. She doesn’t seem to have much to work with besides wide-eyed looks and nervous laughs. Unlike Vidya, who’s a pro and knows how to flip even the worst jokes back at the host -- Kapil had nothing but a sheepish grin by the end of that one.
But with Tripti, she’s just standing there, looking all vulnerable and caught off guard, and you can’t blame people for feeling bad. We’re left rolling our eyes, thinking, “Did they really just do that to her?”
These are the types of questions and criticism that outsiders get. The outsiders are never given the same respect or benefit of the doubt that the star kids get. Vidya is a perfect example because she was badly treated during her early years in the industry as well and she's been very vocal about that.
The best example is the Filmfare Na-Real Award. Vidya and Rani were both supposed to get that as the award was making fun of how they dressed in the movies. Vidya said she was told it was just a joke and it would be shared by her and Rani so she agreed to it. Then last minute, she found out that Rani was not amused and flat out refused to accept the award. So Filmfare was only giving the Na-Real Award to Vidya. Suddenly, Vidya felt uncomfortable because she knew that if she's the only one getting the award, it feels like the joke is on her rather than her being part of the joke. But she was told she couldn't back out of it, even though Rani could, and she didn't have the right to share this award with the director or costume designer. She had to accept it by herself and was told to not even mention the director or costume designer. She did mention them and got in trouble and Manish Malhotra publicly called her out and started targeting her.
So this shows the double standard that Rani could refuse this but Vidya couldn't. Vidya herself says that she was too new to be allowed to have an opinion. This is the difference between coming from a film family and not coming from one.
She recalls it her as her first major tryst with nepotism. “At that night, I was shattered. I was shattered because I was very alone. I realised that yes, it does make a difference when you don't come from a film family. Because no one outside you is looking out for you. It felt like bullying to me. It was, it undoubtedly was. Just because I don't come with a certain shield, you can't… I thought it was a joke so it was okay. But when I realised I was the only one being made fun of, it wasn't funny anymore,” Vidya said.
