I think that the downfall of Akshay started with his lies about to which country he 'officially' belongs (that added to all the not-so-nice things done in other fields of his life).
Everything he did after getting flack for his Canadian citizenship and his openly catering to the political regime took away a lot of good-will for him (because - in my perception! - he's often only mediocre/lazy in his work). So, I guess, audience got simply incurious about his movies.
And yes, there are a lot of remakes/adaptations among his choice of work (and a movie like Perfect Strangers has a good place on OTT).
