Why has the cinema experience gone down?

I think apart from bad films the overall cinema experience too has gone down in india. Pvr which is the biggest chain of cinema halls works to install multiple screens in each multiplex but rarely those cinema halls are maintained after 2-3 years. They suffer from bad screens, uncomfortable chairs, bad sound systems and non effective ACs. Nobody likes to sweat it while watching a movie. The food quality too is poor in cinema halls. They often serve drinks with no fizz and stale eatables at high prices. This is 2024 and the surround sound systems and screen quality are still lying in 1990s. We need to employ new technologies to make movie watching experience more immersive and more compelling. One example is the sphere in las vegas. People are going crazy over it. If we can have driverless cars and robotic arms now we need that kind of tech in cinemas too! Watching a film at your home with powerful sound systems, great Air conditioning, no chatter from kids around has become a much better experience than watching the same film at the theatre.

I went to the PVRs in almost all the metropolis, it’s usually very underwhelming experience. The chatter inside the theaters is the biggest problem but even if you ignore that what about the general cleanliness, bathrooms etc? The food, more than once I got the samosas with frozen filling, fizz less sodas and chewy popcorn. Food costs more than the ticket but they couldn’t guarantee a basic quality control. Overall it feels like a lost cause to watch a movie in the theater, unless the movie is exceptionally good and able to completely draw your attention from these things.

I don't buy overexpensive food/drinking in theatres...I can easily do without that...it's for the movie I go smiley1

Yes, the chatter can be irritating, but when I focus on the movie, I hardly notice it.

It costs a fortune thesedays. Not worth it unless you have a bunch of friends with you to fuss and gossip with. Online booking has ruined the experience for me. Half the fun was in queueing up at the theatre not knowing if you'd make it to the counter before they put up the Housefull wala board. Phir black mein ticketd khareedne ki koshish ,having to whisper if there's a cop around , outbidding other black mongers , cheap cotton candy during the interval etc. None of that anymore. Oh and rats in air-conditioned theatres. Somebody at the other end would say they saw a rat. The news would spread You'd cling to your lays and keep moving your feet in case the rat is under your seat. Just as you are about to forget about the rat a couple of girls in the next row would scream but it was just the bajuwali Auntie's saree flap. The drama !

You cant bite your nails anymore when the plot thickens because there are cams inside.

1. Films are no more worth it. It has been a while I have wanted to go watch a film in theatres. If I really want to watch, would rather wait for it to come on OTT. Coz there is no craze to watch it immediately. Maybe that's just mesmiley36

2. The food in theatres is too expensive and it would be fine if it was worth it, but it's not. And if you skip the food, it's no fun.

3. Ew, people smiley36

I strangely find most of them underwhelming unless one is going to a pvr premium outlet like Director’s cut where they have ticket prices around 1200 per person.

Seriously which pvr are you all going to?? Which city ? So shocked to read all your accounts. Have never experience anything you all mentioned. In fact food quality have improved. Only irritating thing last movie I went to was mobile light in front row to me and afterwhile that too was ignored and this happened first time.

Even single screen I go nearby is good not pvr level but good/ok. Love samosas at Movie theatres. Second single screen bathroom was not ok once I went so avoid that one but first one I mentioned is totally fine.

At Pvr there are attendants in the bathroom and I feel they waste toilet paper and water again to keep it clean after each use even though it is clean. Tap water is sensor.

Groups can be disturbing sometimes but thankfully not encountered such groups much.

Reactions of public in the theatre at intense or shocking or laughter scenes is joy to the ears as feel all are watching and enjoying with us.
