You are absolutely right… since the outsiders are also doing exactly what nepo kids are doing… we are only getting mediocrity served. I guess the scarcity of talent and good content is not completely about Nepotism. But it is also about the treatment of cinema these days. Films these days are considered to be an act of promotion rather than a creative outlet. A hit for an actor or producer doesn’t mean an intent to create a good film but to strengthen his/her resume so that they can do more influencer ads, start a restaurant or makeup line of their own and then milk that short-lived popularity for years. I have a question, if we talk about popular nepos or non-nepos of present days, has anyone of them ever done a film which was made to tell a gripping tale. NO! These days films are made around actors and not like earlier when actors were just a part of a larger canvas.. a stiry, a film. Pathan jawan dunki.. Do they tell any extra ordinary story? NO! Raazi Mimi and Gunjan Saxena, yes they were good films but did they tell anything unique? NO! Did they have anything in them that only an extra ordinary actor can do. NO. So basically films these days are curated to fit an actor’s resume .. to convert them into brands that can mint money for businesses and themselves. Did fighter, bang-bang and war have anything different to offer? NO! Did Bhool bhulaiyya 2 tell any worthy story. NO!
I think there are only two actors from A listers.. Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir khan.. who don’t want films to fit around them but they work in films with good stories and fit like a piece of puzzle in them. 104 not out, Badla, Rang de basanti, TZP, laal singh chadha, dangal. These films were not made to save the careers of Aamir or AB. They were made to tell a tale. Until we have more actors like these who value the art than the profit we will be served mediocrity only. Not only we need nepotism to be in check but we need actors, directors, writers who actually want to deliver a story.
Bhumi pedneker killed it in Bhakshak but nobody talks about it. People only talk about the gym clothes of Janvi Kapoor. Bhakshak was not made to save pedneker’s career but it was made to tell a gripping tale. Many such films.. Thappad, badla, Pink, laapata ladies, kathal. And if you compare it with mediocre films like gunjan saxena, mili, bhool bhulaiya2 you realise how some mediocrely talented people are repeatedly forced down our throats just because they have a better PR game may be.
