Joan was unpopular because she mean-girled Mary Pickford, America's biggest movie star ever, in her way to fame. So she was considered a "nasty" beauty. Her actions, especially towards someone like Pickford who created America's movie industry caused her trouble.
The thing is that female actresses are expected to be good people and good actresses, where we do not have that moral compass for men. The older South actresses had such terrible lives because their parents controlled every stage of their being, knowing that if their "good" image was spoiled, they would be destroyed. Inadvertently, they fell into bad company on their own.
Back to the OG topic, Suhana is stuck between a hard place because people don't like gross displays of privilege by a woman, especially a non-stunner woman (in their eyes).
Mean girled Mary Pickford lol? Mary Pickford was her mother-in-law. Her in-laws were awful to Joan and did not invite her to their home, Pickfair, which invited every bigshot and celeb back then until much later on in their marriage. They made Joan very insecure and while her FIL was still somewhat accepting, her MIL was especially cold to her. They constantly reminded Joan that she grew up dirt poor and didn't receive an education. In fact, that entire situation is reminescent of many saas-bahu dramas. To go to school, Joan had to work in the laundry with her mother because there were no child labor laws back then and she was relentlessly teased. Even to the end of her life, she said her biggest regret was not being able to receive a formal education and with her first two husbands, who were both from wealthy families, she made an effort to practice her diction and memorize the dictionary to improve her vocabulary.
So Mary Pickford, who may have played the eternal child and America's sweetheart onscreen, was no sweetheart in real life.
I agree with you about the situations of the South Indian actresses with their family lives and double standards imposed on them versus the men.
And you're right that Suhana gets flack on all sides because she's not a conventional looker but she's still rich. Her being beautiful would still have made her existence forgivable, hence Kareena Kapoor.
