I think back then, no one took Mallika seriously because of the kind of films she did. She had herself admitted in those days that she has a very average face and would have no way made it otherwise.
Also, given her past that she comes from a very orthodox family in Haryana. Also disowned by her family for coming into movies - she comes across as a person who stood up for what she believe in was right. It takes immense courage to do that - she had even broken off a marriage in those days (that too, coming from a traditional orthodox family) - she spoke her mind without demeaning her family or ex in public.

Had she made the statement today about women today, would things have taken a different turn?
I think most BW celebs who shunned her or made not so good remarks about her wanted her gone, they either didn’t like what she was doing or her.
Also , I think she was fabulous in movie like welcome too.
