Three year itch
When the promos of this remake first came out, it felt like the makers have killed the spirit of BR Chopra"s original Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978) and cheapened it to the level of a crude sex comedy. That film, starring Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Ranjeeta was way ahead of its time. It pointed out that husbands are promiscuous creatures and no amount of domesticity can tame them. To say that in the "70s was bold to say the least. And to say it in a light-hearted manner, without hurting anyone"s dignity, was a masterstroke indeed. 40 years later, Mudassar Aziz has tried to replicate the formula and has been more or less successful. He"s taken the basic premise of the 1978 film and has woven a modern take on it, set in Kanpur.
Abhinav "Chintu" Tyagi (Kartik Aaryan), a topper in public service exam, marries Vedika Tyagi (Bhumi Pednekar). She makes it clear in their first meeting itself that she likes sex a lot, is not a virgin and is emotionally high maintenance. Her only wish is that her husband should do some jugaad and gets himself transferred to Delhi. But Chintu is a perennial small town guy. He likes Kanpur. And he feels that somehow, his wife has always underappreciated him. So when Tapasya (Ananya Panday), who wants to lease some land for her business venture lands in his office, it feels as if his fantasies have come to life. She likes his overall goofiness and starts falling for him emotionally. He knows she"s not in his league and yet is totally smitten and can"t tear himself from it. What follows is a series of near-escapes where he"s almost found out by his wife. He"s aided in this by childhood buddy Faheem (Aparshakti Khurana). Whether Chintu learns his lesson and repents forms the crux of the film.
The screenplay is the film"s hero. Mudassar Aziz layers up one hilarious situation after the other, making you laugh at Chintu"s misadventures. The witty dialogue, targeting everything from our current political situation, to our myths to Bollywood stars keep you in the splits. The first half breezes by smoothly. The second-half, where the emotional quotient is upped a bit, isn"t as smooth in contrast and could have done with a bit more finesse.
It"s a comedy for sure but Mudassar has hit upon some real issues as well. The film rightly points out that the onus of being faithful in a marriage doesn"t just fall on women. And that they can very well move out and carve a life for themselves if they chose to. The film pokes fun at the fact that men will ogle at skimpily clad women and find it hard to take when such women are all covered up. Because then their fantasy takes a beating. It also hints that the bro-code makes men turn a blind eye to or even support the follies of their buddies.
Kartik Aaryan is the king of monologues and gets two here. He"s as charming and as affable as ever and his Everyman act is just what the doctor ordered. Aparshakti Khurana has the best lines. His motormouth act keeps the momentum going. Bhumi Pednekar delivers another sassy act. She seems to have become the torchbearer of women"s emancipation. Ananya Panday makes a more confident stride in her second film than her first. It"s a difficult role but she keeps it real. Let"s reiterate here that all four actors have performed to the parameters defined by the director. No one comes out as a villain, vamp or victim and this in effect is the veritable cherry on the cake...
Pati, Patni Aur Woh, Movie Review: Get Set, Go For This Kartik Aaryan-Bhumi Pednekar-Ananya Panday Show
Kartik Aaryan entrenches himself further. Bhumi Pednekar is a scene- stealer. Ananya Panday is climbing the ladder. You are unlikely to dislike Pati, Patni Aur Woh

It's not lifted from the 1978 classic, it's fresh and entertaining, it's not made for the heck of piggybacking on a hit's name. Starts off a bit slowly but Mudassar Aziz (director) starts pedaling real hard after 45 minutes and the labour of love starts rolling out into a fun drama. It's always difficult to reprise the past and yet keep the viewers engaged and grinning but Aziz has done it. Pati, Patni Aur Woh is a cute-watch.
Kartik Aaryan has tried to do an Amol Palekar here. I had a similar feeling when I saw him in Luka Chuppi. Or was it that both films had him caught in crossfire, which was a hallmark in Palekar's ventures? This young man is affable and once again pulls it off with ease; he will travel far. The clean shaven look didn't suit him much. Quite liked him in the stubble-look when he's about to have a clean shave because Miss Panday likes it that way.
Bhumi Pednekar, you are a marvel. Sonchiriya, Saand Ki Aankh, Bala and now this, you deserve still more. Every dialogue you say, you have an expression on your face. If you recall, I think I told you after Saand Ki Aankh that directors and writers are now writing lines for you.
Ananya Panday, you impressed me yet again. You benefited the most from Student Of The Year 2 and this one is your capital gain, capitalised by your efforts. You are here to stay. Your mom and dad can put their collars up. Aur haan, I quite liked your gold coloured outfit in your entry scene and how can I forget the green knotted top you wore on grey jeans (wish there was a longer scene in that outfit).
Aparshakti Khurrana's striking resemblance to his brother Ayushmann continues- he can do little about that- but clearly, he is not behind his brother.
Loved the mall scene; the background music in that added a lot. Loved the scene when Bhumi walks out on Kartik. Loved the scene when Ananya takes Kartik to a nightclub and on the other side of the fence, Bhumi is dancing away pissed drunk.
The music is breezy enough, keeping in mind the twists and turns. Certainly can't complain about the Akhiyon Se Goli Mare number.
The only places where this film reminds you of the Sanjeev Kumar-Vidya Sinha-Ranjeeta film is Ananya's entry being similar to Ranjeeta's and Kriti's to that of Parveen Babi's. Yes, Sanon too is in this one, a real good Friday for her- Panipat has her in the lead.
Pati Patni Aur Woh is a full-on timepass film. But, but, but... it has a message delivered largely by Miss Pednekar in quite a few scenes in the last 30 minutes. Manoranjan aur seekh tab dono milenge, bas aur kya chahiye?
I am going with 3.5

What’s It About:
‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ revolves around the life of Abhinav “Chintu” Tyagi(Kartik Aaryan). After completing his engineering he ties the knot with Vedika Tripathi (Bhumi Pednekar) and they have a beautiful married life, but it all goes downhill when he falls for Tapasya Singh (Ananya Panday). How Chintu balances his life between these two ladies, forms the rest of the plot.
What’s Hot:
The entire movie is a laugh riot and there is never a dull moment. Kartik’s chemistry with both Bhumi and Ananya is great. This rom-com has all the usual ingredients that we have in Kartik Aaryan starrer- a monologue, extremely funny one-liners and a humongous mess up. Bhumi and Ananya looked absolutely gorgeous and lived up to the characters quite well.
But a special mention has to go to Aparshakti Khurana, who has done a spot-on job and if he wasn’t there in the movie it might have just fallen flat. His comic timing is great and all his one-liners hit the bullseye.
Sunny Singh and Kriti Sanon’s special appearances were very much welcome and they didn’t feel like a waste. The plot of the movie is nothing that we don’t already know of but the way it was portrayed made the difference. The music of ‘Pati Patni Air Woh’ was also great and not a single track was out of place. Obviously ‘Dheeme Dheeme’ song was a standout.
What’s Not:
There isn’t really much in the movie that was a downer at all.
Verdict:
‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ is a great one-time watch and will keep you glued to the seat. The whole high paced Chase will keep you on the edge and Aparshakti’s dialogues will have you cracking up every moment. I give this movie 3.5 stars.
Box-Office:
Considering that there is one other prominent movie(‘Panipat’) releasing at the box office, ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ might suffer due to it. But it may do fairly well if the other one fails to live up to the hype.
