This is really interesting because same thought crossed my mind though from what little I remember about Smita she was more in .hema's category. Like just wanted kid with Raj Babbar but was very independent. Ruhi - raj 's wife was a big name in theater and seemed rather okaish with the whole scene. Don't remember any mud slinging.

Early Feminism movement is littered with broken houses. Many hard lined early era feminist actually were involved with married men. Some became second wives/ lived in with married men. One of the major issue early feminist had was with the fact that after marriage they would become husband's property according to British law. They could never live their life on their own terms.

Shabana's issue stemmed from the fact that smita was considered more prettier and more intense actress. Also commercial movie maker actively wooed Smita because camera apparently loved her. She photographed real well. Also Smita was into lot of movements and unlike shabana, Smita was into it deep. I think smita also painted if I remember it correctly.😳

By the time of Smita Patil's death in 1986:
- Shabana Azmi had won 4 National Awards for Best Actress
- Shabana Azmi had won 3 Filmfare Awards for Best Actress

During her lifetime, Smita had won 2 National Awards, and 2 Filmfare Awards. The last wins coming in 1981.
Whereas Shabana had several wins in 1983, 1984, 1985.

Also, Smita played a supporting role to Shabana in Mandi and Arth.

I'm not saying Shabana was not insecure, only she really knows whether she was or not, but Shabana had achieved more accolades than Smita. They were arch rivals from late 70s to mid 80s.
Quite possibly, Smita was also "insecure" of Shabana just as much.

Yea, I watched that movie Mandi few months ago, I connected Smita's acting much more than Shabana's.

Blame autocorrect , I meant Pretence that Shabana portrays...

Shabana surrendered herself to Parallel cinema much much later than Smita. Awards don't measure who is more talented or not. Smita is much more accomplished than Shabana, and still even today Smita is revered way more than her & considered to be the better actress, also she could fit into commercial roles very easily and was good at comedy which Shabana could never do in her entire career, that's why she had to shift towards art cinema because she was a miscast in glamorous roles. Besides that Smita not only received Padma Shri before Shabana, she's also claimed to be the youngest recipient ever of Padma Shri award. Her premature death did help & contributed a lot to Shabana's career in future!

Shabana's VERY FIRST film was in "parallel cinema" (Swami, 1974)
Both Shabana and Smita debuted in '74
Smita's first success came with Bhumika (1977)
Shabana had already won a National Award 2 years earlier
Smita won 0 awards post '82
Shabana had a golden run from '83-'85
Smita passed away in '86

In fact, in answer to your last sentence. If you look at Shabana's career post Smita's death, it was a very visible dip in her career/popularity. It took her several years (post mid-90s) to get another wave of success. That's a whole decade after Smita's demise. 🤓

And anyhow fyi, Jaya Bachchan and Asha Parekh were awarded Padma Shri's in 1992. They are senior to Smita and Shabana in both age and entry into films. Padma Shri does not work like that, in order of overall status or contribution. 😉

You literally say "awards don't measure who is more talented" but then you end your argument with "Smita received Padma Shri before Shabana" so???? Does it count for you and not for me?? 😳
