Happy Birthday, Waheeda Rehman!
The actor, who made characters like Rosy (Guide) and Gulabo (Pyaasa) legendary with her beauty and spontaneity, turns 76 today
Born on May 14, 1936, Waheeda Rehman made her entry into Hindi cinema with CID opposite Dev Anand. The actor was a huge fan of Dev Anand, who was a big star at that point, and she was thrilled when she found out that she was going to make her debut as his leading lady.
Waheeda Rehman's career can be divided into three distinct parts. The first was when she started working with Guru Dutt. After seeing her in CID, Dutt decided to cast Waheeda in a lead role in Pyaasa. She soon became Dutt's muse. After that, the two worked together in several films like Kagaz Ke Phooland Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, but Dutt's marriage and alcohol addiction made them drift apart.
The second phase saw Waheeda rise to the peak of her career after doing several successful films, including Kala Bazar and Prem Pujari. She enjoyed a great working relationship with Dev Anand during this time. She won an award for her portrayal of Rosy in Dev Anand's Guide, based on RK Narayan's novel by the same name.
In the third phase of her career, the actor's films began to fail at the box office and she decided to take on some offbeat roles. But before that she got her biggest hit in 1970, with Khamoshi opposite Rajesh Khanna. In 1971, she was applauded for her performance in Reshma Aur Shera and even won a National Award for it.
She came back to films after several years, playing mainly the character of a mother. She was praised for her performances in Lamhe and Rang De Basanti.
The last time Waheeda Rehman faced the camera, it was for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi-6, which released in 2009. We hope to see this brilliant actor on the big screen once again soon.
