A lot of critical appreciation for Urmila's intensely firm and skilled performance in MAINE GANDHI KO…. last year was a stamp of sort on her potential as an actor of true finesse. That performance was close to the one in SATYA where she played a modest middle class lady with defining perfection. Off late she was becoming synonymous with horror movies especially after KAUN. Though in BHOOT and NAINA she was brilliant, Urmila was definitely looking to free herself off of the mould. PINJAR and MAINE GANDHI…. offered her the opportunities and she lived up to the expectations to the hilt.
Urmila's foray into Bollwood with MASOOM was on the lines of 'she came, she saw and she conquered'. That movie saw her acting talents just blossom and she acquired a lot of appreciation from the fans and fraternity alike. Years later she again met success as a grown-up with movies like Narsimha (starring Sunny Deol), Aa Gale Lag Jaa (with Jugal Hansraj) and Chamatkar (with Shahrukh Khan). But for some reason, she was eluded the star status and cementing her rank in the race seemed to be an uphill task. Her contemporaries back then Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala and Juhi Chawla were climbing the ladder with brisk pace and their popularity was just at the peak in the early 90's. But Ram Gopal Varma's RANGEELA changed all that. Urmila became the sizzle of tinsel town and in a way still carries that tag.
Urmila was probably the first actress in modern times who transmitted that 'oomph' factor as the leading lady. But at the same time she is an actress of amazing talent. Just recall her sensitive performances in SATYA, JUNGLE, PINJAR and KHOOBSURAT. One thing she hasn't attempted extensively and that is comedy. Reasons unknown for that but given her fine talent, her flair for comedy must also be tapped! Currently she is doing CHAMKI that is being directed by Shyam Benegal. Also the buzz is that she will be dazzling the crowds on the evergreen number 'Mehbooba o Mehbooba' in Ram Gopal Varma's SHOLAY. If that happens, it will be her most revered item number after 'Chamma Chamma' from R K Santoshi's CHINA GATE.
4th February is Urmila's birthday and we take this opportunity to wish her a Happy Birthday. Her fans would just hope that she continues to regale them for years and years to come!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY URMILA!!!🥳
