Chapter 2
~At the same time somewhere in Delhi~
"Your flowers are withering away Priya. Try giving them some water at least dear." A soothing voice echoed into a pitch black room. The windows were closed and only through a slight opening in the curtains, a ray of light passed in. Priya did not feel like moving at all. She was too tired of thinking, fighting and struggling through each day. She did not respond; just lay their closing her eyes, trying to remember what it felt like once, to live life.
She was once a jovial, uplifting person and more than anything she was one who understood everyone. One people regarded as being honest, truthful and reliable. These words don't define her anymore, not after a very carefully planned betrayal, she decided in her mind.
She had to do it, she knew that. She was indeed aware of what would follow if she took that step. And still she was compelled to do it, compelled by fate, destiny, and her life.
Her thoughts were intruded by yet again that soothing voice. "Priya! Dear can you hear me?" "Yes Aunty! I am coming down in a moment." She replied hastily. Priya carefully got up, trudged her way through the room seeking the support of the walls. She needed her sun glasses before she dared to go out into the light. After all, her eyes sought support of those now... Well, it was more like she needed the support of everything around her. She had become dependable. A thought she absolutely despised.
Her eye sight had diminished over the years. Slowly, very slowly but, noticeably it was fading away with time. She was thankful that at least she could make out the faces of people a bit, rather difficult but she managed.
After putting her sun glasses on she slowly descended the lowly built stair case, just for her ease. She was used to it and easily dealt with it. She could make out her Aunty making breakfast as usual in the kitchen area. As soon as she went down, she attended to her plants. They were withering, as Aunty had said.
"Sorry! I couldn't take care of you for the past few days. You know right... Circulating through the hospital had been too much of a burden on me" Priya liked talking to her plants. She felt as if she was she was talking to him... He would always criticize her plants. "You grow them as your babies and then you eat them Priya! Seriously, you need to stop tormenting the poor plants... Eating grass" And then he would have had a hearty laugh and she would be all smiles.
"Priya Beta! Aren't you going to be late for your program? U better hurry, anyhow you need more time than anybody to reach places. And one more thing, eat your breakfast! The doctor advised a healthy diet for you and you will follow that under my orders." Her Aunty, or rather the landlord, was her only family here in Delhi. She was the only one whom she ever told about Ram, and she understood. She did not think of her as a betrayer, but she believed in what Priya did, gave her comfort, and made her feel secure.
"It was the correct decision Priya. Given your circumstances and his, he couldn't have handled a soon to be visually impaired person along with a business co-operation." She would often say so. Priya would be re-assured by her thoughts always. However, there was one thing they both couldn't agree upon. Her marriage!
Shipra Aunty would always start of the topic from the middle of nowhere. She would always try to make Priya understand that she was 31 by now and more than that she needed the support of a caring spouse in this condition. Priya would however, always give a flat refusal. She did not want, need, wish or even thought of anyone else other than Ram. She was adamant about surviving through his memories. That was the one thing that could not change; her memories of him.
"Aunty! I am going to the station. Listen to it on the radio. And we need to go to the doctor after I come back." Priya made her way through out of the door into the familiar neighborhood. In the time she had been there, everyone was welcoming and friendly. They would help her out as much as they could. She had by-hearted the usual routine of her daily life. She had hired a driver, keeping in mind there was no other way for her to reach the places she desired. She would then get off at the Galaxy Radio Station as per her schedule. Priya was a Radio Jockey in this very small but popular radio station amongst Delhi audiences.
She had to leave a lot of things apart from Mumbai and Ram, and that was her love for teaching. She was left with no choice but to leave that afar too. It was on Shipra Aunt's insistence that she applied for this job. Priya's fluency in English had gotten her the job, but she had to reckon with the impossible as soon as her vision played games with her. This time however, she won. She learnt how to play with the instruments with the vision that was granted to her.
She would one day have to leave this job too; she understood that well enough not to care. But at the time she was too busy solving other people's problems through her program. However, she never used her real name. All of the people in the audience knew her as "Shreya". This was too just to hide from Ram, with the fear that he would get to her someday. And that day she did not want to answer any of his intolerable questions.
But that day was soon to come...
"Kitni akeli thi woh rahen hum jinpe
Ab tak akele chalte rahen
Tujhse bichhad ke bhi o bekhabar
Tere hi gham mein jalte rahen
Tune kiya jo shikwa
Hum woh gila kar naa sake
Hum bewafa hargiz na the
Par hum wafa kar naa sake"...
Thanx all for the support!! 😊 Will try updating soon...
