Netflix’s new twisted love story, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein starring Tahir Raj Bhasin, Shweta Tripathi and Anchal Singh is a tale that will toy with your senses at every point. The story revolves around Vikrant who is ready to lead a simple life with college sweetheart Shikha, until his plans are ruined when Purva’s overwhelming desire to have him takes over. Laced with action, romance and really edgy music, this show is a thorough entertainer. Produced by Edgestorm Ventures Pvt. Ltd., Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein is created and directed by Sidharth Sengupta who is known for creating popular television shows including Balika Vadhu and the series, Apharan.
As usual, we are here to make the decision of whether to watch the show of not easy for you by breaking down everything that goes into the show, how do the actors fair, and some more. An interesting watch for sure, whether you enjoy it or you think of it as a one time watch, you'd know just a few minutes into the episode.
Performances
Tahir Raj Bhasin as Vikrant is definitely an impressive performance. Given the fact that the actor is everywhere, it is commendable how he manages to keep every character different and visibly so. At a time when we've seen him in other roles and will be seeing him in other roles, the sheer fact that he stands apart yet again, is enough to prove the caliber of the actor. And like the show or not, you love the performance.
Shweta Tripathi as Shikha, doesn't disappoint once again. You know when you see a show or a movie with her in the pivotal role, it is going to be an absolute pleasure, and that is what her performance proves to be. Anchal Singh aka Purva, is a great surprise that comes along the show, and though you want to dislike her and detest her, to say the least, you do, but you don't. Those mixed feelings that she gives you with her performance, is testimony to what great actor she is, and just how nicely has the show been written.
Brijendra Kala, Arunoday Singh, Surya Sharma, Anant Joshi, Sunita Rajwar, Shashi Verma, Anjuman Saxena, Hetal Gada, all play their parts well and add to the way the story progresses. Saurabh Shukla as the gangster politician with power is once again, a great cast and manages to own the character.
The Good
The setting of the show, is nothing new, but the fact that it keeps you hooked even when you think you might want to forward, is the area that this show operates in - and the times that we live in, it is an absolutely great thing for any show. The story is tight, the performances are great, and it has been shot extremely well. The look and feel of the show are all great and you enjoy watching it for a major part of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PcY7fn3ptcThere's this sense of poetic touch to the turn of events happening, and though they wind up to be a tragedy, if we could call it, the Netflix show does make for a good watch after all. The cinematography in Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein by Murzy Pagdiwala, Rahul Chauhan, and Murli Krishna is beautiful and it also depicts those things.
The fact that Vikrant is narrating the tale, makes it bittersweet, maybe? But there's something about the show that does have an edge, and in the end, you probably know why.
The Not So Good
There's this bit right in the middle, that can possibly make you want to stop watching the show. It feels dragged, but not boring, and though it does not pick up in time, you kind of have mixed feelings about the fact that you sit through it. The climax is not as impressive as you hope for it to be when you are half way into the show. Not free of loopholes, the ending is one thing that wouldn't sit right with many!
Verdict
If this is a genre you think you like, you will enjoy watching the show, but you got to binge watch it for if you stop, you might never get back at it. With a weaker second half but great performances and a good to look at show, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein gets the tragic note to a love story right, and also does right by it.
