"We don't want to encash it simply, and that was the pressure" - Utkarsh Sharma on 'Gadar 2's success

The wave that Gadar 2 brought in, resulting in gargantuan numbers at the box office, might have been over, but with the film's digital release having happened recently, even more people have gone on to notice and appreciate the film. While the film was an absolute commercial blockbuster, as you would imagine it to be, and Sunny Deol was at the helm of the heavy lifting, it is actor Utkarsh Sharma who also received a lot of love and admiration for his role in the film.

And now that the film has turned out to be the mammoth success it is, we had a couple of questions for the actor, as he went on to respond to the same. In an exclusive conversation, Sharma opened up on why he thinks audiences related to the film even after two decades and whether there was added pressure to deliver since Gadar 1 was a massive success.

Gadar 2 has become a massive successful entertainer, and the audience has praised all aspects of the film. What do you think worked in the favor of Gadar 2? Why did audiences relate to it even after 20 years?

-The things that worked in the favour of Gadar 2 were its story, its emotions, and the songs. These three things were the core values of Gadar 1 and Gadar 2. I think the story of a father saving a son is a very ingrained emotion in us Indians. A son wants to do whatever he can for his father, and a father wants to do whatever he can for his son; this emotion really connects. There are so many twists and turns that helped build a lot of excitement. The action of the film is on a massive scale, which has really thrilled the audiences. The reason why they can relate to it after 20 years is also the fact that we have retained the same cast, mainly Sunny Deol. Sir, he is still donning Tara Singh with such fierceness and such earnestness; very few people can do that. We all tried to stay true to Gadar 1, which is why Gadar 2 has turned out to be such a huge hit."

Was there an added pressure to deliver since Gadar is a popular and successful franchise?

Well, obviously, there was pressure in the sense that we knew that whenever we make Gadar 2, it must be as good as Gadar 1, at the very least. And whenever we make it, it must grow the brand of Gadar 2. We don't want to encash it simply, and that was the pressure we always had over the last 20 years. When we finally cracked the story for Gadar 2, we were very certain that this was going to be something special. So yes, there was that pressure to fulfil the public's expectations and to not play with their emotions but to give them what they want out of Gadar 2. To see all of that come true and to see the audience love it really makes all of us very satisfied and happy.

Gadar 2 stands as the second-highest Hindi-grossing film of all time, just behind Jawan.
