Roopa Ganguly, a Rajya Sabha MP and well-known actress-turned-politician, was taken into custody on Thursday, October 3, following an overnight protest outside a police station in South Kolkata. The protest was staged in response to the arrest of local BJP leader Rubi Das.
Ganguly alleged that Das, along with other BJP supporters, had been peacefully protesting an accident when they were attacked by members of the Trinamool Congress. She further accused the police of wrongfully detaining the protesters instead of taking action against the attackers.
The former actress, best known for her portrayal of 'Draupadi' in the iconic TV series 'Mahabharat,' continued her sit-in throughout the night. It wasn’t until after 10 am on Thursday that the Kolkata Police formally arrested her, citing charges of obstructing police officers from performing their duties.
Police officials stated that Ganguly’s arrest stemmed from her actions that hindered the lawful functioning of the authorities.
