Review: Vikrant Massey, Sunil Grover’s Blackout is a chaotic tale with few sparkling moments

Sunil Grover carries this thriller comedy on his shoulders proving why he is a goldmine of raw talent. Blackout has a few hilarious moments but is lacklustre overall.

When we talk about films that relate to incidents that happened over one night the notable ones that immediately come to our minds are Taxi No 9211, Chameli, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and the 2024 release Merry Christmas. Blackout, a thriller cum comedy is in the same genre. Lenny D’Costa is a hotshot crime reporter who specializes in sting operations. A night of crime leads to a chaotic sequence of events where we are introduced to many eccentric characters.

Blackout has its twists but…

The movie directed by Devang Bhavsar has endless twists and turns. The first half starts off slowly, and is quite drab. The twists do not engage you, and the comic lines fail to make you laugh. Blackout fares better in the second half as the comic punches land with more precision. In short, Blackout is a tale of greed, betrayal, moral decline packed together with ample dose of modern humour that draws huge references from social media. While the comedy in Blackout still has a couple of good moments, it just serves pure chaos in the name of thrills.

Sunil Grover towers over the rest of the cast

TV’s Dr Mashoor Gulati again proves why he is one of the brightest talents around. Sunil Grover plays a flamboyant don Ajgar Bhai who has a love for Urdu poetry. Grover takes it up a notch further and is stellar in a couple of scenes. Vikrant Massey tries his best to get into the groove of this mad entertainer but falls short. Laapaata Ladies actress Chhaya Kadam makes an appearance as a corrupt cop. Mouni Roy’s performance too is inconsistent.

Blackout shines on these technical fronts

One of the best aspects of the movie is its music. While Vishal Mishra makes a couple of songs keeping with the mood of the film, the BGM by John Stewart Eduri is also good. The placements of the yesteryear classics is apt. Manas Choudhary has done a good job with the sound designing.

Blackout Verdict

Blackout has its moments but fails to light up the screen on most occasions. Devang Bhavsar packs in a lot of elements but fails to do justice to a single one of them. The biggest let-down is the screenplay where comic scenes just do not land as they’re expected to. There is nothing much to miss in this Blackout.
