It is no secret that Undekhi on Sony LIV was what we term to be - a sleeper success. It was launched in a year when the streamer was on an absolute roll and gave us phenomenon successes like Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. But amidst all the mega hits that one and all remember, Undekhi managed to achieve critical acclaim and love from the viewers as well.
But with Season 2, there is now added pressure and a benchmark to live up to, Having seen a few episodes of Undekhi Season 2, here's what I thought of it-
The Good
Undekhi Season 2 picks up right where it left in Season 1 which ended in the death of Rishi (Abhishek Chauhan) while Koyal (Apeksha Porwal) managed from escape. The influential family of Atwals continue their search mission for Koyal and then for the likes of Shashwat (Sayandeep Sengupta) and Saloni (Ayn Zoya) as well. I have to give credit to the makers of the show for managing to start the show with a bang! Unlike the first season, where time was needed to develop the characters, in Season 2, we already know them and hence are put straight into action. Spanning a few episodes, the continuous chasing of Koyal, Shashwat and Saloni could have gotten monotonous but the writers and director have done a brilliant job in keeping you hooked.
Anchal Singh getting centre stage was actually rather expected one would imagine. After her exhilarating performance in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, Singh as Teji Atwal gets centre stage here as she knows that menacing family she has gotten married into and is on a double mission to not only expose her brother-in-law and father-in-law but also save her friends. Singh does a fine job of expressing the vulnerability when she gets caught in some situations but also the fierce bravura in others.
The locales of Himachal Pradesh continue to plays its own character throughout this cat-and-mouse game. It is amazing how the situations happening are as dangerous as they can be but somehow it still looks beautiful because of the locales of HP that we are in. And special credit for capturing this so well goes to Murzy Pagdiwala where blue-ish tones continue to be the dominant color.
Undekhi Season 1 was a massive success majorly due to the brilliant performances that the cast exhibited. That doesn't change here as the likes of Surya Sharma and Harsh Chhaya as Riku Atwal and Papaji respectively continue to have flamboyance in their character as they pretty much rule the place they stay in; Dibyendu Bhattacharay as DCP Ghosh gets a new role as he is trying to flee from this mess but not entirely and the introduction of characters like Abhaya and Samarth played brilliantly by Meiyang Chang and Nandish Singh Sandhu turns out to be worthy additions. Especially, Nandish Singh Sandhu manages to exhibit a certain swagger as Samarth while his character is being a barrier to the Atwal family. The actor's suave personality helps his character as he becomes an important piece of this crazy puzzle.
The Not-So-Good
There was barely anything which would qualify as not being good in the show but if there is something, it has to be the character progression of Daman (Ankur Rathee). While, you understand him being aloof from the murkiness in his family, even after his newlywed wife Teji tries to uncover things from her end, he doesn't do too much, at least in the initial episodes. Giving the benefit of doubt that this might change in the episodes ahead.
The Verdict
All-in-all, Undekhi Season 2 is not only a worthy continuation of Season 1 but tops the first season in several was presenting delicious mysterious and exhilarating chase sequences.
