Review: 'Potluck' is a pleasant surprise being the perfect comfort watch

Sony LIV had a brilliant record in 2020 with its web shows and became the streamer to be presenting the sensation that was Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. In 2021, the streamer has come up with some interesting shows but always that one pleasant comfort watch.

Its latest presentation Potluck arrives to fill that void. India has not had a good run with sitcoms where some have been borderline dismal as well.

Potluck isn't that in any way. Starring a brilliant ensemble cast, the show manages to blend all the perfect emotions while not comprising on the laughs. The show is about a quirky yet lovable family which consists of a mother, a father, three grown-up children where both brothers are married with their wives and the sister is still dating. The eldest son also has three kids to add to the party. The family, while staying apart in their own luscious homes do have a sense of togetherness ad they keep meeting for potlucks time and again.

What's Good

Potluck is the token comfort-watch that Indian entertainment industry was waiting to have for a long time. The show exhibits a realistic portrayal of an urban affluent family with some quirkiness and love. Every character is etched out neatly and the relatable aspects is what makes the show totally watchable. Be it the lovable moments between couples, or be it some LOL moments that come with their share of shockers; the show does a fine job in being able to show the fun attached to it. While the funny moment's are a plenty, it is the family values without being preachy factor that works the best for the show.

What Not-So-Good

There isn't anything flat-out bad or underwhelming but the idea of 'potluck' does get stale as episodes go by. Clocking 8 episodes, the sitcom treats each one as an individual topic while some matters recur ahead. But the base concept kg potluck stays which is fun in the first few episodes but gets a tad too repetitive later. Even then, it doesn't hamper the quality of the content though.

The Performances

Harman Singha

With a massive ensemble cast of some of the finest actors, it was never a doubt that all of them would do a fine job. The likes of Cyrus Sahukar, Ira Dubey, Saloni Khanna, Shikha Talsania and Kitu Gidwani are brilliant as you would expect from them to be; but for me the biggest surprise was Harman Singha. I haven't really seen Singha in any other acting project before this one and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy he is on the camera. Singha was brilliant, effortless and lovable as well.

The Verdict

Potluck proves to be a fantastic comfort watch and the kind of sitcom we (Indian content) was dying to have. Where drama shows have been a constant here, a good sitcom is such a fresh breath of air. With the weekend upon us, Potluck is apt for you to get your binging time on.
