It can be safely said that Sacred Games changed the way that we perceived digital space to be. With fabulous performances by our Bollywood actors, theatre artists and even Marathi theatre stars, Sacred Games season 1 was the complete package.
However, the character of Mikki, Bunty's sister, which was essayed by actress Sukhmani Sadana did catch several eyes. Having recalled seeing her in a completely different avatar in her television debut, Sony TV's Khottey Sikke, it came as a pleasant shock for viewers to see her play Mikki.
Mikki is the raw, brash sister of Ganesh Gaitonde's (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) right-hand man Bunty (Jatin Sarna).
Ask her about this drastic on-screen transformation, Sukhmani says, "That's absolutely true. My television show Khottey Sikkey saw me in a very glamorous and hoity-toity kind of a girl from South Bombay. And Sacred Games was just the opposite of it. In contrary, I was a girl from the slums, very crass and very abusive, so it was very different for me."
Ask her how did she get into Mikki's skin, she reveals, "As a person, I'm more like how I was in Khotey Sikkey. So, it was very challenging for me to play the role of Mikki in Sacred Games, because she was literally living in the slum and whenever she opened her mouth, she was abusing."
She continues, "I had to tame myself, took some workshops and saw a lot of films which are based on slums in India. And, even Anurag sir was very helpful. I usually refer to a person as'aap', he told me 'when you say tu', just say it with full authority like you mean it. And when you're slapping me or your brother because he has misbehaved, slap him with conviction. Initially, I was slapping Jatin (Bunty), I was politely doing it and kept saying sorry. But then, with time and with days of the shoot, I got into form and when I slapped, I slapped really hard and I meant it."
"I had to build up all my vent and my anger; that's what we are supposed to do as an actor. We're supposed to get into the skin of the character. So I was Mikki all through Sacred Games and I was living the life of Mikki. I stopped going to the parlor, I wanted to live raw, I was not living a fancy lifestyle. I tried to make my lifestyle normal and regular and low middle class as much as possible. So you got to do these things as much as you can and that really helped," the actress revealed.
