Writer, director and producer of shows like Baa Bahu Aur Baby, Khichdi and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai amongst others, Aatish Kapadia has many popular television shows to his credit. Starting off with theater, Aatish has made a name for himself in the Television industry and along with his friend and partner Jd Majethia has been in a partner in the successful company Hats Off Productions.
Bhade is a Marathi surname, so will you depict a Maharashtrian family and background?
The show is in the weekend evening slot. Did you have a say in the timings of the telecast?
The competition will always be there so why should we watch them and make a show, we will make a show which will be liked by the audience. We think in absolute. More competition does not matter to us. Whether there is more competition or less we will do that much of hard work for our product every time and give our output.
Ready to launch their new show Bh Se Bhade on Zee TV, Aatish speaks about the show and more...
Tell us more about the show Bh Se Bhade...?
It is a feel good fantasy show and thanks to our writer Sachin More who got us this concept. The idea originates from a story by the well known Marathi writer V.P. Kale (famously known as Va. Pu. Kale) who had introduced a character known as Bhade and we bought the rights for it and developed it into a full show.
Will it be a typical Hats Off productions family show?
It is star kingly different and also similar in a certain way... similar in a way that it is a full family show which will not offend anyone's sensibilities. Just like all our other shows everybody from 9 to 97 years of age can sit together and watch it as a family show and have a blast. Different since it is a fantasy which a genre we have explored before.
No, not necessarily. Earlier we had thought of giving it a Maharashtrian color but what happens is that you are talking to the entire country. The name of the family too is Bhade which will be a difficult surname to pronounce and then on top of that if we make it a total Maharashtrian concept then it will alienate itself further! As I said it is a full family show meant for the entire Indian audience. Regionality is sometimes a handicap and we wanted to make it a pan-Indian, contemporary, modern family. Because of the concept where Bhade is able to take anybody and everybody's problem we wanted it to appeal to the entire nation and not just the Maharashtrian families.
Va Pu Kale had written this story long back. Do you think it will appeal to today's generation?
Yes, it can apply anytime since the simple philosophy is that there is a Bhade in everybody. Whenever someone falls down, at least four people go up to him to help him stand up on his own feet again so everybody has a mother Teresa in him or her. It is how we use that feeling inside us... so it is an universal thing and I think that in fact in today's times it is even more relevant because today if we see anyone fall down people are reluctant to help, thinking of the consequences that might follow later so on the contrary today it is even more relevant to kind of give the sense to people that look around, you can be of help to other people. Do not be indifferent whether it is an accident case or a police case or while donating eyes or donating blood. In that sense it is more relevant today.
Will there be a social message in each of the episodes?
We will be getting into how you can be of help in the society however, we don't want to make it too preachy so we have to be careful. The focus is on comedy and it is a nice, feel good comedy show with lot of characters and interpersonal relationships. So, yes there will be a social message which will be subtly delivered to the audience.
No. The strategy is something which is decided by the channel and I think they have done a lot of research and about the kind of shows that they want at a particular time slot and we are ok with it. Earlier we used to give others a run for their money when our programme Baa Bahu Aur Baby was on air. After a long time we have got the one hour weekend programming slot but I'm not anxious as long as people watch it and like it.
And what about the competition?
The competition will always be there so why should we watch them and make a show, we will make a show which will be liked by the audience. We think in absolute. More competition does not matter to us. Whether there is more competition or less we will do that much of hard work for our product every time and give our output.
You are a writer, producer and director. Are you creatively involved in this particular show?
For Bh se Bhade we have Sachin More as the writer. He is a very integral part of the show and he got into the show very different sensibilities which is why it will look different even though we have certain actors like Deven Bhojani, Sarita Joshi, Suchita Trivedi who have a Hats Off trade mark on them but in terms of content it is very different.
I too would give inputs and Sachin was very open when I gave suggestions. So I have been a character builder and I give plots. My job is to throw things at him so that he gets overwhelmed with the things that come to him and it is his job to take or not take those ideas and mould them accordingly.
You are soon coming up with a Marathi show for Star Pravah.
Yes, work on the same is going on. I don't differentiate between a Hindi GEC channel and a regional channel, for us all the channels are the same.
