The recently released Netflix film Nadaaniyan has put its lead debutants, Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, in the spotlight—but not all for positive reasons. The film, which hit the platform in March, has received mixed reactions, with some viewers criticizing the storyline while others have targeted the star kids personally. Actress Dia Mirza, who plays Ibrahim’s mother in the film, has now spoken out against the harsh trolling.
In an interview with Bombay Times, Dia addressed the negativity surrounding the film and expressed her concern for young actors facing online hate. “I have never been in favor of personal attacks and find them extremely disrespectful,” she said. “Everyone is free to have an opinion, but it shouldn’t be expressed at the cost of somebody’s mental health.”
She further highlighted how such criticism often singles out actors from film families. “I’ve been concerned, especially for the younger actor, about the harshness of what’s being said. I feel there’s a culture of ‘eat the privileged,’ which is harsh, because people have their own stuff to deal with,” Dia added.
Nadaaniyan, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatics Entertainment, features Ibrahim and Khushi in a romantic tale about love, self-discovery, and complicated family relationships. The film also stars Jugal Hansraj, Mahima Chaudhary, Suniel Shetty, and Apoorva Mukhija. Jugal Hansraj, who plays Ibrahim’s father, also shared his thoughts on the trolling in an interview with India Today Digital. He called the negativity “silly and petty” and encouraged audiences to provide “constructive criticism” rather than resort to personal attacks.
Reflecting on her own journey, Dia also spoke about how her perspective on success has evolved over the years. “When I started out, it was more about box office and material gains. Now, it’s about showing up prepared and offering your best self to the opportunity,” she shared. While Nadaaniyan continues to stream on Netflix, discussions about nepotism and online criticism rage on. However, Dia’s words serve as a reminder that behind the stardom are young individuals simply trying to find their place in the industry.
Up next, Dia Mirza will be seen in Kaafir, streaming on Zee5 from April 4, 2025.
