Munjya Week 2: Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh starrer surpasses Rs 68 Cr., eyes century at box office

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and starring Abhay Verma, Sharvari Wagh, and Mona Singh, "Munjya" has enjoyed an exceptional second week at the Indian box office, grossing over Rs 30 crores. With a two-week cumulative total of Rs 68 crores, the film is on track to potentially hit the Rs 100 crore mark during its full run in India, assuming it can withstand the competition from "Kalki 2898 AD" set to release next week.

As "Munjya" moves into its third week, it remains the top choice for Hindi moviegoers. This is despite facing tough competition from the second week of "Chandu Champion" and the newly released "Ishq Vishk Rebound," which has been particularly popular among younger audiences. "Munjya" has solidified its status as a box office super-hit and marks the second major success for Maddock Films' Supernatural Universe, following the hit "Stree." Speculation is rife that "Munjya" will tie into the upcoming "Stree 2," which is slated for an August 15, 2024 release and is anticipated to have a grand opening.

"Munjya's" success underscores that a film doesn't need a star-studded cast to achieve box office glory. What truly resonates with audiences is a compelling concept, a clear vision, and broad appeal.

"Munjya" has outperformed many higher-budget films released around the same time, demonstrating that a strong storyline can trump star power.

The narrative of "Munjya" begins in 1952 with a tragic tale of unrequited love. A boy, forbidden from marrying Munni, a girl seven years his senior, is forcibly shaved and witnesses Munni's marriage to another man. Consumed by anguish, he performs dark magic under a peepal tree, attempting to use his sister as a sacrifice. The ritual goes awry, leading to his death and transformation into the monstrous Munjya. Bound by a curse, Munjya torments his own family, seeking out Munni.

In the present day, we follow Bittu (Abhay Verma), who works at a hair salon with his mother (Mona Singh). Bittu is plagued by recurring nightmares, which intensify during a visit to his ancestral village with his mother and grandmother. There, he learns of Munjya and encounters the cursed entity at the haunted peepal tree. Although Bittu narrowly escapes, he is relentlessly pursued by Munjya, who demands Bittu's help in finding his lost Munni.

The blend of a gripping backstory and modern-day horror elements, along with its connection to the larger Supernatural Universe, has made "Munjya" a standout hit.
