Kyunki… Saas Maa Bahu Beti Hoti Hai actor Mehul Vyas says that it is not true that only women go through body shaming and even men go through it. He adds that empathy and support is what this issue requires.
“Body shaming is a harsh reality that affects individuals of all genders. It's essential to recognise that this issue goes beyond gender, as both men and women can face insensitive comments and unsolicited advice about their appearance. The ideal viewpoint on this matter is one of empathy and support. We should acknowledge that each person's body is unique, and no one should be judged or criticised based on their physical attributes. Instead, we should promote body positivity, self-acceptance, and the idea that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Educating people about the harmful effects of body shaming and fostering a culture of kindness and respect is crucial,” he says.
He adds, “Our society often places an undue emphasis on physical appearance, leading to unfair treatment of individuals with darker skin tones. Discrimination based on skin colour is a deeply rooted issue, and it's disheartening to see it manifest in schools, colleges, workplaces, and even the entertainment industry. It's important to challenge these prejudices and actively work towards a more inclusive and diverse society. Everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, irrespective of their skin colour or physical attributes. This can be achieved through awareness campaigns, anti-discrimination laws, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.”
He said that he has seen this happening in his vicinity as well. “In my virtual realm, I have observed instances of body shaming and discrimination. I once helped a friend who faced immense pressure due to body shaming. It was a learning experience for me as well. I provided emotional support, encouraging my friend to embrace their body and work on their mental and physical well-being. This incident made me realise the importance of not just supporting the victims of body shaming but also educating others about the harm it can cause,” he says.
This issue needs to be dealt with well, he says, adding, “To address body shaming across professional sectors, including the entertainment industry, a multi-faceted approach is needed. First, public figures and influencers should use their platforms to promote body positivity and diversity. Secondly, organizations must implement anti-discrimination policies and foster inclusive work environments. Schools and colleges should educate students about the consequences of body shaming. Finally, individuals should actively challenge their own biases and prejudices. It's only through collective efforts that we can create a society that values people for their character, skills, and talents rather than their physical appearance. Body shaming can be eradicated, but it requires a commitment to change from all segments of society.”
