The cost of entourages for Bollywood stars has recently been a hot topic, with many filmmakers, including Anurag Kashyap, criticizing these expenses as unnecessary. Renowned Bollywood makeup artist Shaan Mutthathil, who has worked with stars like Jacqueline Fernandez and Rani Mukerji, has now weighed in on Anurag Kashyap's remarks. He noted that Kashyap's films do not typically require celebrity makeup artists because his heroines often wear simple, inexpensive outfits, like cotton sarees costing around Rs 250, and need minimal makeup.

In a recent podcast for the YouTube channel "Phitte Muh With Sik & Jas," Shaan discussed the high fees charged by celebrity makeup artists and hairstylists, including himself. He emphasized that everyone in the industry works to earn a living, and after years of gaining experience, they charge for their expertise. He questioned whether Anurag Kashyap would accept a lower fee equivalent to that of a new director after delivering several hit films.

Shaan also addressed the jealousy within the industry, noting that makeup artists and hairstylists often earn more than managers, first ADs, and assistants of DOP.

He explained that only a few artists command high fees, while millions of others in Mumbai earn much less.

Regarding Kashyap's statement, Shaan commented, "Of course he can lose his s**t" upon hearing about makeup and hair costs of Rs 1.5 lakh, since his films, which often feature heroines in rural settings with minimalistic looks, don't require such expenses. "His film is in some village with the cotton saree of Rs 250, she wakes up, and she cries," he said, highlighting the different aesthetic needs of Kashyap's cinema. He added that Kashyap's films rarely have scenes requiring elaborate hair and makeup, such as a girl running in slow motion or close-up shots of her lips.

Shaan contrasted Kashyap's perspective with that of Karan Johar, who, when discussing industry costs, did not criticize makeup and hair artists but rather suggested that actors should reduce their fees. "He knows the importance of makeup and hair," said Shaan.

Anurag Kashyap is known for directing acclaimed films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, No Smoking, Black Friday, and Ugly. He has also earned praise as an actor in movies such as AK vs AK and Maharaja.
