Madalsa Sharma quits Anupamaa after extended absence from the show

After Sudhanshu Pandey's departure, Anupamaa has witnessed another major change with Madalsa Sharma, renowned for her portrayal of Kavya, officially leaving the show. Kavya's storyline saw her return to her modelling career and embark on a new assignment in America, marking a significant shift in her character's journey. Her absence from the series led to widespread speculation about her departure, which has now been confirmed.

In a conversation with BT, Sharma shed light on her decision to leave the show. She explained that her departure was not a spontaneous choice but rather a well-considered decision that had been on her mind for some time. "When the show started in 2020, there were three main characters - Anupama (Rupali Ganguly), Vanraj (Sudhanshu Pandey) and Kavya. It was Kavya who brought an upheaval in Anupama's life and that changed things for everyone. Kavya was shown to be an independent and strong woman, who had the guts to fall in love with a married man and pursue him. My character had tremendous growth, but in the past one year I felt that the story moved on from Vanraj, Kavya and Anupama," Sharma noted.

Over time, however, Sharma felt that the storyline had shifted away from the dynamic tensions between Kavya, Vanraj, and Anupama. "There was not much spice or spark left in my character. Had Kavya continued playing the grey character that she played earlier, I would have continued to be a part of the show. For the past few months, the creative team tried to do something different with my character, but nothing worked out. So, (producer) Rajan Shahi sir and I mutually decided it was best for me to move on," she reflected. Sharma also mentioned that despite efforts from the creative team to reinvigorate her character, the new directions did not resonate with her vision for Kavya.

Her decision was also influenced by personal considerations. Sharma, who has been married to Mimoh Chakraborty for six years, shared that her family supported her choice to explore new opportunities. "My mother, husband and father-in-law (Mithun Chakraborty) felt that I should move on if I want to pursue other things and grow. I wanted to leave the show when my character was being appreciated and liked. This character will always be close to my heart," she said.

Interestingly, in an earlier exclusive conversation with India Forums, Sharma had addressed exit rumours when she reassured fans of her return with renewed vigour. The actress dismissed the rumours, stating, "No, I am not quitting the show. Kavya is very much a part of Anupamaa. Currently, Kavya is not in the show, as the makers are building some suspense. I can't reveal much, but Kavya will soon return with a bang."

For those who might not know, Anupamaa has had two major leaps. The first leap moved the story to America, while the second revealed Anuj's anguish over the false news of Aadhya's death. Since then, Kavya has been missing from the plot, and Mahi has left with Vanraj.

As Sharma closes this chapter, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to portray Kavya and hinted at exciting new ventures ahead. Her departure opens a new narrative space for Anupamaa, ensuring that the show's evolution continues to captivate its audience.
