Karisma Kapoor clears the air on Kapoor family work rumors during Zakir Khan's show

Karisma Kapoor recently shed light on the long-standing rumour that the Kapoor family does not permit their women to work. In an appearance on Zakir Khan’s show, Aapka Apna Zakir, she addressed this topic and clarified the misconceptions. According to Karisma, the decision for Kapoor women to focus on family life was their own, rather than a restriction imposed by the family.

Karisma explained, “Yeh sab baatein hain ki mujhe allow tha yaa nahi tha. Jab meri mummy ki shaadi hui aur Neetu aunty ki shaadi hui, unka choice tha ki unko ghar basana tha, bachche karne the aur career achha hua tha. Unka choice tha.” This translates to, “All these discussions about whether I was allowed or not is just that—discussions. When my mom and Neetu aunty got married, it was their choice to focus on building a home, having children, and stepping away from their careers, which were going well. It was their decision.”

The actor also pointed out that not all Kapoor women chose to step away from their careers. She highlighted that Shammi Kapoor’s wife, Geeta Bali, and Shashi Kapoor’s wife, Jennifer Kendal, continued working even after marriage. Karisma stated, “Similarly, Shammi uncle and Shashi uncle’s wives, Geeta Bali ji and Jennifer aunty, unhone kaam kiya shaadi ke baad. Toh aisa kuch baat hai nahi ki Kapoor family mein shaadi ke baad kaam nahi kar sakte yaa Kapoor ladki kaam nahi kar sakte. Aisa kuch nahi tha.” This means, “They continued working after marriage. So, it’s not true that in the Kapoor family, you can’t work after marriage or that Kapoor women aren’t allowed to have careers. There was never such a restriction.”

Karisma’s comments put to rest the rumours about restrictions on career choices within the Kapoor family. She emphasised that individual choices regarding career and family have always varied within the family.

On a professional note, Karisma Kapoor is currently a judge on India’s Best Dancer 4, alongside Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis. She is also set to star in the upcoming OTT series Brown, a thriller featuring Helen, Ajinkya Deo, and Soni Razdan, where she plays a detective investigating a murder while battling alcoholism.
