At the NDTV World Summit 2024 – The India Century, Bollywood icon Kareena Kapoor Khan shared her evolving perspective on global cinema, revealing her dream of standing in the same frame as her idol, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep, and possibly exploring the world of Korean dramas. Speaking at the event, Kareena emphasized that while Hollywood has never been a primary goal for her, she remains open to new opportunities in international entertainment.
"Language is no longer a barrier in today’s world," Kareena said during the summit. "Hollywood was never something I actively pursued, but I’ve always admired Meryl Streep. Standing alongside her in a film would be a dream come true. And who knows? Maybe I'll even get a chance to explore a Korean drama. Everyone’s watching them, and I’d love to be a part of that world."
Kareena highlighted the growing global appreciation for Indian films, citing the massive success of Indian content across borders. She pointed to last year’s Oscar-winning track Naatu Naatu from the Telugu blockbuster RRR, which not only won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards but also had international dancers grooving to it live on the Oscar stage. “It shows how our films, rich in culture and heritage, are loved worldwide,” she said.
The actress also praised the evolving global consumption of Indian films. Her recent project, The Buckingham Murders, shot in the UK, reflects this growing international interest. “Our films stay true to our roots—whether it's drama, action, or song and dance—and that's what sets us apart. Audiences around the world enjoy different kinds of cinema, yet they also celebrate our unique storytelling,” Kareena added.
Kareena further commended her Crew co-star Diljit Dosanjh for representing Indian talent on global platforms, saying, “Diljit has made India proud, putting us on billboards across the globe.” She also celebrated the official Oscars entry Laapataa Ladies, a film about the journey of two women, which she believes will elevate India’s presence on the global stage.
Encouraging international audiences to appreciate Indian films in their original language, Kareena emphasized the ease of understanding Indian cinema through subtitles on OTT platforms. “I hope more people watch our films in Indian languages, because that’s where their true essence lies.”
Kareena concluded by announcing that her film, The Buckingham Murders, will start streaming on Netflix from November 8, further expanding her reach to global audiences.
