Karan Johar files plea in Bombay High Court to stop release of 'Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar'

Renowned Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has taken legal action against the creators of the upcoming Hindi film, Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar. On Wednesday, June 12, Johar approached the Bombay High Court to prevent the use of his name in the movie's title.

In his plea, Johar cited the unauthorized use of his name and sought an urgent stay on the film’s release, which is scheduled for June 14, 2024. He requested a permanent injunction against the producers, IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh, and writer-director Bablu Singh, to stop them from using his name in any part of the film's title.

The case was brought before Justice RI Chagla, who agreed to hear it on Thursday, June 13. Johar argued that the title's direct reference to his name infringes on his personal rights and violates his publicity and privacy rights.

Johar stated that the filmmakers are exploiting his "brand name" without permission, thereby manipulating his goodwill and reputation. The plea noted that the film's promotional materials, including trailers and posters, have already been distributed publicly and on social media, leading to significant harm to his reputation.

"These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Further, such a release of the film with the title containing his brand name 'Karan Johar,' together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort, and money," the suit stated.

On the professional front, Karan Johar is preparing for the release of his next production, *Kill*. The film, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and starring Raghav Juyal, Lakshay Lalwani, and Tanya Maniktala, premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The trailer for Kill was released yesterday and the movie is set to hit theaters on July 5.
