Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, tied the knot on June 3, 1973. Their marriage was a private affair, celebrated in a small ceremony. The couple's bond has been a strong one, enduring for over four decades, and they have become one of the most iconic couples in Indian cinema. Despite the joyous occasion, their path to marriage faced opposition, particularly from Jaya’s father. He voiced his disapproval, even telling Amitabh's father that his family would be "ruined" by the wedding.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan shared this tense moment in his autobiography, "In the Afternoon of Time," shedding light on the wedding day's underlying tension. “Before we left, I embraced the father of my new daughter-in-law and congratulated him on getting a son-in-law like Amit, expecting him to say the same in respect of Jaya. But he said, ‘My family is utterly ruined,’" he wrote.
This harsh reaction came despite the couple's deep affection and commitment. Jaya Bachchan later discussed the pre-wedding challenges on the podcast "What The Hell Navya," revealing Amitabh’s father had strict conditions, including forbidding them from traveling together before marriage.
“He called me and said, ‘My parents are saying you can’t go for a holiday with Jaya. If you want to go for a holiday with her, you marry her.’ We were planning to get married in October, but we preponed it to June," Jaya said.
Amitabh Bachchan supported Jaya's career, urging her to continue working while being selective about projects. "I definitely don’t want a wife who will be 9-5. Please work. You must work but not every day," she recalled him saying.
Her father disapproved, believing marriage shouldn't be the sole ambition for his daughters. "I have not brought you into this world to just educate yourself, get married and settle down and have children. I want you all to do something in life," Jaya quoted her father saying.
Despite the initial opposition, Amitabh convinced Jaya’s father, leading to a small wedding with his parents present. More than 52 years later, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's marriage stands strong, and they have two children, Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan.
