The film Animal, released in 2023, was a major commercial hit but faced criticism for its controversial content. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal in this crime thriller sparked debate among viewers and critics. Recently, screenwriter Javed Akhtar, who has previously criticized the film, addressed a question about whether Ranbir Kapoor could ever achieve star status akin to Amitabh Bachchan because of Animal.
In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Akhtar discussed the evolution of the 'angry young man' archetype, once popularized by Amitabh Bachchan. He noted that the original portrayal of anger in Bachchan’s roles had a layer of deep emotional pain. Akhtar explained that this nuance is what made the anger compelling and relatable. “There was deep hurt behind his anger,” he remarked.
He further elaborated, “Then they forgot about the hurt, and there was only anger, which was crude. And that is how the angry young man went out of the scene.” According to Akhtar, the absence of substantial characters has led to a shortage of iconic stars in today’s cinema. He implied that without compelling roles, it is challenging for actors to reach the legendary status of stars like Bachchan.
When asked directly if Ranbir Kapoor’s involvement in Animal might prevent him from becoming a star like Bachchan, Akhtar responded with a hint of optimism. “No, no. I may write a film for him,” Akhtar said with a smile, suggesting that he remains open to creating opportunities for Kapoor.
Animal features a diverse cast including Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and others, with Kapoor playing the violent character Ranvijay Singh. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film dives into dark themes and intense drama.
Javed Akhtar is also featured in the docu-series Angry Young Men: The Salim-Javed Story, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on August 20, 2024. The series, directed by Namrata Rao and produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Media and Entertainment, and Tiger Baby, explores the iconic screenwriting duo’s impact on Indian cinema and includes interviews with several major Bollywood figures.

Animal was such a pathetic movie and accepting such character by ranbir kapoor as he is the upcoming lord Ram in movie based on Ramayan was more pathetic ....and positive reviews coming from Javed Akhtar was even more pathetic. He should assess first, what he is saying and about whom and why?
