Exciting new reports have emerged about Ranbir Kapoor’s next big project, the mythological epic Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It has been revealed that Ranbir will be taking on not one but two significant roles in the highly-anticipated film, portraying both Lord Ram and Parashuram. This marks the third time Ranbir will tackle a double role, following his performances in Shamshera and the upcoming Animal.
In Ramayana, Ranbir's dual roles connect deeply with the story’s mythological roots, as both Ram and Parashuram are avatars of Lord Vishnu. While Parashuram's appearance in the Ramayana is brief, it is a critical moment in the narrative, where he challenges Ram after the latter breaks Shiva’s bow, Pinaka. Upon seeing Ram successfully bend Vishnu’s bow, Parashuram recognizes him as an incarnation of Vishnu and retreats. Reports suggest that Ranbir will look drastically different in his portrayal of Parashuram, distinguishing him from his role as Ram.
Adding even more star power to the ensemble, legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan has joined the cast to lend his voice to the character of Jatayu, the divine bird who dies heroically while trying to rescue Sita from Ravana. Though Bachchan’s role will be vocal, the filmmakers have gone a step further by scanning his eyes for VFX enhancements to bring Jatayu to life with greater emotional depth.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast alongside Ranbir Kapoor. South Indian actress Sai Pallavi will take on the role of Goddess Sita, while Yash will portray the menacing Ravana. Sunny Deol is set to play Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey will take on the role of Laxman. The film also includes other well-known actors, such as Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha, and Arun Govil as Dashrath.
With a massive budget of $100 million, this ambitious two-part saga has been in pre-production for over five years. The film finally went on floors in April 2023, with production expected to wrap up by November. Fans can look forward to a grand worldwide theatrical release in 2026, promising to be one of the most anticipated mythological films of recent times.
