She went to Boston, USA to continue her studies, but returned for her debut movie Teen Patti (2010) when she was spotted on Facebook by the producer of the movie, Ambika Hinduja.

Kapoor debuted with Teen Patti (2010) and though the movie did not do too well at the box office, her performance, and the movie in general, was appreciated by critics. She then went on to sign a 3-film deal with Yash Raj Films. She portrayed the lead role of Rhea in Luv Ka The End in 2011 and though it did not fare well at the box office, her role was once again appreciated by critics and viewers. Though Kapoor was offered Aurangzeb, she went on to sign Aashiqui 2 and this cancelled her contract with Yash Raj Films. Aashiqui 2, which released in 2013,  became a huge hit, bringing her career to an all time high. She was nominated for the Best Actress category at the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Awards. She then went on to do an extended guest appearance in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013). Kapoor is currently shooting for The Villain (2014) opposite Sidharth Malhotra and Haider (2014) opposite Shahid Kapoor.
