BollyCurry is back with another set of birthday wishes, this time for an actor who set an all together different benchmark with his acting ability and screen presence. Jackie Shroff is a yesteryear Bollywood actor who made it big by redefining an artiste.
Jaikishen
Kakubhai Shroff, or Jackie Shroff as he is popularly known, was born on
February 1, 1957 into a Gujarati family to Kakubhai and Rita Shroff. He
has modeled in a few advertisements before he stepped into the Bollywood
industry
with a short role of a villain in Dev Anand's 1973 hit film Heera Panna. He then made his
debut with another of Dev Anand's popular flick Swami Dada (1982) which is his first credited screen appearance.
Later, Shroff
was approached by Subhash Ghai to play the lead role in his 1983 love story Hero, opposite the talented actress
Meenakshi Sheshadri. The film turned him into a star overnight and he had
various movies to look forward to. He went on to do a series of hit films
including the likes of Raj Sippy's Andar
Bahaar (1984), Jainendra Jain's Jaanoo
(1985) and Rajiv Rai's Yudh (1985).
In 1986,
Shroff did Subhash Ghai's ensemble movie Karma
which became the highest grosser of the year. 1989 brought him an award
winning performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's crime drama Parinda, for which he won the Filmfare
Award for Best Actor. After that his career took an upward lift as he featured
in numerous critically and commercially successful movies like Ram Lakhan (1989), Hum Bhi Insaan Hain (1989),
Tridev (1989), Baap Numbari Beta Dus
Numbari (1990), 100 Days (1990), Saudagar (1991), Angaar (1992), Aaina (1993)and Khalnayak
(1993). He has been a part of a
large number of movies, which did good and bad, alike. Naming all of them shall
fill up probably a greater part than we intend to since he has been active in
the industry at a stretch.
Shroff has ventured into different cinema throughout his career span, from Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, to Oriya,
Bengali and Punjabi. In 2013, he lent his voice to the 3D animated film Mahabharat for the character of the vicious Duryodhana. The more recent movies of the actor in the year 2014 include
the Tamil historical fiction Kochadaiyaan,
a paranormal comedy Gang of Ghosts and
one of the highest grossers of the year, the action-heist film Happy New Year. He is the proud owner of
the distinguished accolades like the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and Best
Supporting Actor, and the Special Honour Jury Award for outstanding
contribution to Indian cinema.
Let's take a
brief glance at some of Shroff's hit numbers:
1. "Pyaar Karnewale" - Hero2. "De Daaru" - Karma3. "Tera Naam Liya" - Ram Lakhan5. "Chhalak Chhalak" - Devdas
Shroff is expected to be seen in a number of upcoming movies including Dirty Politics co-starring Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah, and Karan Malhotra's Brothers, starring
Akshay Kumar and Siddharth Malhotra. With that, BollyCurry wishes Jackie Shroff a Happy Birthday,
with the hope that he continues to entertain us for many years to come.
