The 7th of March each year marks the birthday of a renowned actor, one who has worked in over 100 plays and up to 500 films of various genres and languages. Famously known for his supporting roles and comedic timing, BollyCurry is celebrating the 60th birthday of the highly respected theater and film personality, Anupam Kher!
Hailing from a Brahmin family, Kher was born and raised in
Shimla. He completed his basic schooling at the D.A.V. School of Shimla and
proceeded to continue his studies at the Himachal Pradesh University, where he
kicked off his acting career by participating in the drama society.
Kher made his Bollywood debut with Aagman in 1982. He was applauded for his villainous turn as the
antagonist in Daddy (1989), for which he received his first
Filmfare Award for Best Performance. He went on to play many prominent roles in
various other movies such as Ram Lakhan (1989), Dil (1990) and Hum (1991). The early 90s saw a massive climb in
Kher's career as he ventured into numerous critically and commercially
acclaimed movies such as Darr (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Koun! (1994), Dilwale Dulhania Le
Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). He put on brilliant performances and
received worldwide critical acclaim in the thriller drama genre with Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara (2005) and A Wednesday (2008).
Kher has also won numerous accolades, one of which
is the grand Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He
has won two National Awards for Daddy and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara, alongside eight other Filmfare
Awards.
Kher is one of the best at what he does and has also made a name
for himself internationally. He has had the opportunity to act in Hollywood,
appearing in Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004) and Speedy Singhs (2011). He was also a part of the Academy Award-winning film Silver Linings Playbook (2012), which stars Bradley Cooper and
Jennifer Lawrence.
Apart from acting, Kher has served as the Chairman of the
National Censor Board of India and is an alumni member of the National School
of Drama. In 2010, he was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Pratham
Education Foundation, a NGO for the healthy education of children in
India.
On the personal front, Kher has been happily married to actress
Kirron Kher since 1985. His step son Sikander Kher and brother Raju Kher are
also a part of the film industry.
Kher's most recent stints in the movie world include Shongram (2014), a British film based on the Bangladesh Liberation
War, The Anupam Kher Show - Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai, a talk show
written and hosted by himself, and the sociopolitical film Baby (2015), co-starring Akshay Kumar. He is
currently shooting for The Dirty Politics alongside Om Puri and Jackie Shroff.
We can all agree that Kher has been one of the most successful
actors of his time, and on his birthday today, BollyCurry wishes him a pleasant
day and hope to watch him shine on the silver screen for many years to come.
