February 9th turns out to be the birthday of actress Amrita Singh. Exquisite and pretty, Amrita Singh is the daughter of political activist Rukhsana Sultana and army officer Shavinder Singh. Her father is a relative of renowned novelist Khushwant Singh and this makes her background quite acknowledged to the world of media and entertainment.
Singh
made her first appearance on the silver screen with the immensely successful
film Betaab opposite Sunny Deol. She
later went on to deliver a series of blockbuster super
hits like Sunny, Mard , Saaheb, Chameli ki Shaadi,
Naam and Khudgarz. Her string of successes led her to being
addressed as a lucky pair opposite
leads actors of the time like Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor and
even
Amitabh Bachchan. During the 1990's she began to experiment with gray
characters, for which she garnered much appreciation and critical
acclaim. Such films included Raju Ban
Gaya Gentleman in 1992 and Aaina in
1993 for which she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress award as well.Even
though her
career was at its peak, she quit acting to get
married to actor Saif Ali Khan, who was nearly 12 years younger to her
at that time. This move was quite controversial; nevertheless, they
tied the knot in 1993. Together, they have two children - daughter Sara
and son
Ibrahim. However, their relationship was on the rocks and finally they
headed
for divorce in 2004. Thereafter, she made her comeback to Bollywood with
a few
films like 23rd March 1981: Shaheed
in which she played the mother of Bhagat Singh. She then played yet another
negative role in Kalyug and mother
roles in Dus Kahaniyaan and Sanjay
Gupta's Shootout at Lokhandwala. Exploring
more diverse roles, she entered the small screen with television series Kkavyanjali
in 2005, where she had a meaty and prominent role, and gave yet more
love from audiences. However she didn't appear in any more shows post
the
closure of this show.
Currently, she is working for her upcoming YRF film Aurangzeb, opposite Jackey Shroff, which
is set to release sometime this year. There is also a buzz that she is to play
the mother of Arjun Kapoor in Karan Johar's forthcoming film 2 States.
Well, we'll definitely have to wait and watch if there is something to
these rumors and if we indeed with be seeing some more of her
charismatic performances soon.
BollyCurry wishes Amrita a wonderful birthday and lots of success for her upcoming films!
