As we embark on this brand spanking new year, BollyCurry is back again to shine its spotlight on yet another fabulous tinsel town celeb in our popular 'Celebrity in the Spotlight' series. The diva under the radar today is especially known for her great fashion sense and impeccable style. Coming from a filmi family and being particularly outspoken, makes this actress one of media's darlings. You guessed it right, it's none other than the beautiful, Sonam Kapoor!
Born on June 9th, 1985 to actor Anil Kapoor and model Sunita
Kapoor, Sonam was essentially born into the film industry. However, during her
adolescence, she was fairly heavy and had multiple other health problems
revolving
around her weight. She studied Theatre and Arts in Singapore at the
United World College of Southeast Asia. It wasn't until she was an assistant
director in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black
(2005) that she considered joining the film fraternity as an actress. After losing
over 70 lbs and taking acting lessons, she made her debut in Bhansali's Saawariya (2007) opposite fellow
celebrity offspring, Ranbir Kapoor. While the movie tanked, both the Kapoors'
performances were appreciated.Sonam followed this up with another dud in the form of Delhi-6 (2009). However, 2010 was the
year for her with two commercial successes in the form of Punit Malhotra's I Hate Luv Storys and sister Rhea Kapoor's Aisha. While Kapoor continued to receive
mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, she had definitely made a place
for herself in the industry and in the hearts of her myriads of fans! Her
career took another dive with Thank You
(2011) and Players (2012), but she
quickly climbed right back up with two successes in 2013 in the form of Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
2014 was definitely kind to Sonam. She made her presence
felt on the International scene as a guest at the Cannes Film Festival and
turned heads with her glamorous style choices, including impressing veteran
designer Tommy Hilfiger. While her initial release of the year, Bewakoofiyan opposite Ayushmann Khurrana,
received mixed reviews, her final release Khoobsurat
opposite the popular Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, was a hit and impressed critics and audiences alike. She
won her second Stardust Award for her role of Milli, the unconventional
physiotherapist in Khoobsurat. In
2015, she will start the year off with the much awaited Dolly Ki Doli releasing later this month on January 23rd; and is
set to end the year with Salman Khan starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, tentatively scheduled for an October release.
What critics say Kapoor lacks in acting prowess, she makes
up with her spontaneity and spunky off-screen persona. Her personable nature
has garnered her a loyal fan-following and numerous endorsements for products
such as L'Oreal, Lux, and Colgate, among many others. Her fashion sense and impeccable style has
allowed her to grace numerous magazine covers on a regular basis including Stardust, Filmfare, Femina, Grazia, Elle,
GQ, etc, with one of her most recent covers being the September 2014
edition of Vogue India. She has featured in numerous best-dressed celebrities
list including the prestigious Harper Bazaar USA's top 8 Hottest Global Style
Setters in 2014, and even won awards such as the GQ Woman of the Year and Vogue
Beauty Awards' Beauty of the Year in 2013.
Overall, we at
BollyCurry definitely think Miss Kapoor has come a long way in the past several
years, although she still has a long way to go. We wish her the best of luck for her releases
and all future endeavours! Looking forward to seeing her shine!
